Question;Double Tracking on 2 Lead-tracks

Hi All,

Who has experience with "Doublle Tracking" . I mean doublle tracking on 2 leadtracks??? Does that work propely??Is there a downsite to it??
I have a free double tracking ADT-plugin , but that doesn,t do much

It does work, though whether "properly" is something you have to decide for yourself, depending as it does on what you are hoping to achieve.

There are two main ways of doing it.

One is to play the same line twice in unison in order to thicken up the sound. This method is often used for vocalists too (maybe more often than you think!).

The other way is to overdub a harmony line.

Both of them require formidable skill in "keeping to the melody" (whatever the melody or improvisation is) and reproducing the timing exactly for the overdub.

Well, it worked for Hank on many hit records. The first one that springs to mind for me is 'Foot Tapper'. I used to play that with two plectrums to get a similar effect. 'Geronimo' is another easy one to hear - these are just off the top of my head.

Not exactly double-tracking, but 'Theme From A Filleted Place' stands out as great example of The Shadows producing the same effect with, for once, Bruce stepping forward from rhythm to play lead alongside Hank.

To the ear, the result is the same as double-tracking, but the pleasure is greater because Hank and Bruce would have played it together in the studio, after many hours of rehearsals in dressing rooms. Is is known which of them played the melody and which the harmony part?

The Strymon Deco pedal has the facility to mimic double tracking by the way. This pedal imitates two tape recorders being used in the studio and does chorus/Flanging and delay by adjusting the delays and levels between two 'decks'

The 'wobble control' moves the head timing as you play mimicking an ADT type of effect which is a slight delay with variable timing. A little bit like how they did it at Abbey Road if you like for John Lennon's vocal overdubs.

I have tried it with Foot Tapper and it does a fair job in a 'live' situation if you want to.

I am sure there are some ADT plug ins around too.

If it's a unison melody line, you'd have to try and duplicate it when overdubbing, but if it's a harmonised line, then you could use double stops to play both notes in the line simultaneously.

Takes practice, but it can be done!

Listening in stereo helps. The tone of Hank's guitar is not the same as Bruce's. Hank carries all the melody while Bruce alternates between harmony lead, broken chords and normal rhythm. Bruce's lead lines are a third below Hank's.

Another feature of this record has amused me since 1961. Jet's bass is not quite tuned. His bottom A, which accentuates the 'on' beats, is slightly flat at the start of the performance and more audibly so at the end.

You can achieve a really good double track sound using the old Q2/Q20. There's a manufacturers' patch which works in stereo, allowing you to detune and eq each side separately thus achieving two different guitars playing together. I used it with Legend to play The Warlord, adding a little distortion for good measure...
