Pyramid Gold Flatwound Strings

Postby anniv 63 » 14 Oct 2015, 11:40

Have noticed some good reviews of these on some Internet suppliers websites.
Just wondered if anyone here has used these to good effect particularly in 10 or 11 gauge
say on a Jazzmaster or Strat
I would guess these need a little adjustment to overall in tension as compared to Roundwounds?
At around £15- £16 a set , breakages a tad expensive!!!!

Any comments on tone , durability, and general life span, would be interesting , I am sure

Hi Mike

I brought a set of 11s and have them on my American Standard, i found them ok but nothing to excite me particularly.

I did have a lengthy discussion with Colin from the Rapiers at Lakeside and he uses guage 13 pyramid gold flatwounds and apparently the guage 13s are a different construction to the 11s and he believes that is the key, of course his talent has a lot to do with it aswell but interesting subject. I have yet to try the 13s but i will be shortly.

Thanks

Regards

Steve

Steve - where does that come from. I mean is it just an opinion or are there any details/specs supporting any construction diffs?

I have used D'addario Chrome flatwounds 12-52 for some months now and for live work I find them very good (much to my surprise actually).

Thanks for your replies guys hmmm maybe a chrome wound G balances the overall sound on say 12-13
gauges!!!
Probably down to trying once at least on a lesser gauge size and see what happens

Best price I can find for D'Addario Chrome flatwounds (this 12-52) is £11.49.

It's an expensive business ...

I tried D'addario Chrome flatwounds 12-52 some time ago and posted on the previous incarnation of ShadowMusic.

I was surprised at the good results for our music, even producing that 'strat bark' prominent on the early stuff.

Be aware, though, that the guitar set up may need to be adjusted even if you're switching to flatwounds of the same gauge. Somehow the guitar seems to 'feel' these heavier than wire wounds of the same gauge. That was my impression anyway.

Patrice Bastien long used these strings, I don't know if he still does.

Even though strings maybe the same gauge its all down to how much tension is used in tuning the strings.
more tension will pull the neck up less will have the opposite effect.
so make sure you check and adjust the truss rod if you change type or gauges of string.
