You're right Stan they are totally different, but as Hank told me he just set's up a 'ball park' tone and works with it.
Last weekend I chose to set up a vintage 1960 sound at our two theatre performances, as we had eight Cliff/ Shads early numbers in the sets. I also had to play the solo in George Harrison's 'Something' for which I used the neck pickup with the treble backed off. That number came immediately after The Savage and Man Of Mystery and it was a seamless change and extremes in tone. If you work it out beforehand anything is possible. I do have my Vox Tonelab SE on the floor in front of me too. :)
