Postby keithmantle » 31 Mar 2015, 23:02

Hi All, I have a peavey classic 30w all valve amp 16 ohm 1x12" spkr, can i upgrade witha Cel Alnico gold 75 w 8 ohm, or use it in a extension cab, the peavey has a Ext'n jack socket, also how can i check if the 'Gold' spkr is not 'worn' out/damaged. thanks

Does it specify an impedance on the extension speaker socket ?

I think you'll have to do a bit more research in the peavey forums. Some imply that just by inserting a jack plug ( on its own ) switches the tap to 8ohms.
This would make the posts below ( which I found in various forums ) correct.

My guess is : plugging a 16 ohm speaker into the extension socket is OK and will run both 16 ohm speakers.
To run an 8 ohm speaker, you would have to run it on its own by disconnecting the internal speaker altogether and plugging into the extension socket which would flip the output to 8 ohms.

posts:-

If you have a 16 ohm extension cab then pluging it into the classic 30 switches the output transformer to 8 ohm mode and runs the internal and external speakers in parallel.

From Peavey support.
...to run an 8 ohm ext cab...
[1]disconnect the cable going to the internal speaker and tape up the ends...
[2]connect your 8 ohm cab to the extension jack...that way, the amp will see an overall load of 8 ohms and will function properly...

On the back panel close to the Ex/jack socket it says 30 watts 22V RMS 16 Ohm minimum load, not sure if this applies to amp or to a Ex Cab. thanks for all advice, taking into account what has been said could i replace the 16 ohm stock spkr and put in the 8 ohm Gold as a upgrade.?

hi,
The Celestion Alnico Gold 10" is 40 Watt, And the Celestion Alnico Gold 12" is 50 Watt.
That is the rating I have on the Two Speaker I have.
You mentioned 75 Watt. Just thought I let you know in case you are after a bigger wattage Speaker.

Hi Carl, On the back of the Ex cab (marshall) it says Lead 1 75w, all i can assume is that the speaker has been changed to the Cel Al Gold at some point, is there anyway to check the gold spkr age ?, Thanks

Speaker power rating is the maximum power that it can handle without damages, so with a 30 amp, 50, 60 or 75 W rated speakers will be fine. For the sound level you have to look at the sensivity figures.

Hi,
As Didier said using larger Wattage Speakers are OK.
Most of the Amp heads I use, I try to keep the Wattage close to the Amps output
in order to work the speaker.
But this is my own preference.
Carl.
