rush to change, upgrade or experiment with anything better. Until recently.
Last year Roger Bayliss was kind enough to let me use his Zoom G3X in my recording studio, ( Alright then, conservatory ).
Being able to do a direct A/B comparison I was able to appreciate what a terrific piece of kit the Zoom G3X is.
However for as good as it is, I did nothing about it until listening to Dave Robinson's recordings of various tunes
using his own patches. Now, I was beginning to appreciate what a difference there actually was. And, just how
good the G3X could be with professionally set up patches.
Dave is a professional musician and earns his living by playing, performing and recording music. As I understand it,
had Dave continued creating patches and sharing them, he would have been a very popular professional musician
who starved to death quite quickly due to lack of time to do what he does best.
Quite recently I read Ross Hall's contribution on Shadow Music. I soon realised that Ross could provide what I wanted with
no effort on my part. ( Being afflicted with rank bone idleness and no shortage of apathy I realised this was the course for me. )
I contacted Ross to see what it was that I got and received a comprehensive e-mail explaining the step by step instructions
to downloading his patches onto my G3X.
I should explain that when "Computer Savvy" was distributed I must have been off sick that day. However, the whole process of receiving
and downloading the patches could not have been simpler. Now for the good part.
The patches themselves are superb. I am delighted with the quality and of course the sounds are terrific.
There are patches for some 37 different patches. each with a "With Amp. Simulation" or "Without Amp Simulation" 74 patches in all.
Covering some 220 tunes plus extras such as "Abbey road reverb", "Surf reverb", "Duane". ( I dare you to turn this on and not play
the lead break from "Guitar Man" ) and more.
So, I now have patches that are extremely accurate. I have a unit that is simplicity itself to use and access these patches.
I have a sound that is better than it's ever been. And, for me, another important factor. I have the support of Ross Hall
himself. By whatever means. E-Mail, telephone, whatever.
Sorry to waffle on. But, this unit and these patches have re-awakened my interest in playing guitar.
Apologies to Ross Hall if I've inadvertently misrepresented anything here.
Cheers, Alan.
