Squier 60th Anniversary Classic Vibe 50's Strat

Postby Ryan » 15 Dec 2014, 21:17

Hi All,

A friend told me about a Squier 60th Anniversary Classic Vibe 50's strat MN in Aztec Gold. Wondered if anyone has any experience of this guitar, are they any good? Any idea what year they came out? I'm assuming it was sometime after 2010 to now. Any idea of the best price for one new?

Cheers
Ryan

Hi Ryan,
I have the White Blonde version of the Squier CV '50s Strat (Mary Kaye model). I guess they are all likely to be the same thing, underneath the paint, with maybe a particular kind of pickup in some cases. Mine plays & sounds very good, & well above it's cost. It's not just another budget guitar; it's a proper Strat & sounds like one. They really need a decent trem block installed, but apart from that, they are great value. I'm sure there are videos on Youtube demo-ing these models for you to check out.

Tony.

They're great lookers & good value. My only criticism is purely aesthetic and applies to all Squier 50's Classic Vibe guitars. That ugly, thick slab of a scratchplate looks so out of place and why Fender didn't choose a more period-correct, single-ply thick & non-chamfered version puzzles me. I'm a bit picky so would probably swap it out for a different one if it was me.
I know that guitar factory QC has come on in leaps-and-bounds of late, but I would still advocate checking out the stock/prices in a local guitar shop, rather than just trying to squeeze the last few quid saving by shopping on-line. Best price isn't always synonymous with the best deal. If you're unfamiliar with the particular model you're interested in, you can't beat being actually able to handle & play it before you buy. Retailers are aware of the internet competition these days and in my experience, most will try to come close to the best you've seen. It's usually not too difficult to get some new strings included FOC in the deal as well. Plus, if you need any warranty service, it's easier & less hassle to drop it into your local shop than arrange, pay for and entrust to a courier.
Don't know where you're located, but where I am in the Colchester area, there are several fantastically well-stocked shops and their prices in the main, match the internet. I'm not buying any more guitars but still like to have a nose around all the gear from time-to-time and buy some strings & other little bits & pieces.
I think it's a sensible concept to try & support the independent retailers if possible. Be a shame if the high street guitar shop disappeared completely.

I endorse what Stephen says. When I bought my USA Standard Strat from my local dealer here in Brum, I not only got the instrument in its superb hardcase with all the bits & pieces; a strap, lead & cleaning cloth etc., but I got £50 knocked off the retail price & another free strap which matched the colour of the guitar. Check out your local shop first & they will look after you. The price was the same as the internet price.
If we don't use them, they will die away, & then we will be at the mercy of the internet giants, who will control the prices we pay, like a cartel.

Well said, Tony. Plus you just can't beat having a good nose around a well-stocked shop can you? 'Specially the little old ones with a good s/h selection. Even if you don't buy anything, it's a far more tactile & satisfying experience than just trawling the 'net. Most of us got hooked on this hobby of ours after pressing our nose up against the windows of guitar shops as teenagers. Somehow, don't think that the pull would have been quite the same had it just been internet browsing.
Let's not forget those aromas either. That lovely whiff when you open the case of a cellulose finished Fender, or the equally distinctive but differing smells of an old Fender valve amp. compared to a Marshall.
I'll stop now before the men in white coats decide that I'm a 'suitable case for treatment'!
