Picking up on Dave's request for more details, in my version of Photoshop, I select the Image menu and from that menu select Image Size. Make sure that 'Pixels' is selected as the units. You will see the current size which might be as much as 5000 horiz by 5000 vertical.
Make sure that 'Maintain Aspect Ratio' is selected. Then adjust the Horiz to 500 and the vertical will be adjusted in proportion. Ulrich suggests 850 pixels but I reckon that is still too much - as you can see, Stephen's resized pic still has scroll bars.
My version of Photoshop is quite old now (v.5) so any more recent version should do what I have described (and a lot more besides). I always hesitate to recommend software that I haven't used myself, but there are lots of Photoshop clones out there that will do the same job.
I have no knowledge of the current range of Apple software but I know that Photoshop always used to be made in a version suitable for Macs. Even if that is no longer the case, surely there must be Apple software that will allow manipulation of pictures? It's one of those 'basic computer needs', like word processing.
As far as uploading pictures is concerned, maybe this needs to be a 'sticky' because i know I've been through this explanation before, but here is is.
Just below the box where you type in your test, there are two tabs - select 'Upload attachment'. Select 'Browse' and browse on your hard disk to find the picture you want to upload. Click 'Add the file'
A new 'Posted Attachments' area appears on the screen showing the file has been uploaded.
Click in your text to place the cursor where you want the picture to be. Click 'Place Inline' and that's it.
