I am looking at the head and cabinet version. Does anyone have any experience of these. I am now wondering if I should go for the combo as comments are so good. Just liked the idea of the bigger speaker

The head & speaker version has diferent controls, just volume and cut with a knob for selecting 4w- 1w or a quarter watt.

My one is the later model and has gain, bass, treble ,volume, which allows Top Boost as well as the normal old Vox sound. That's the difference between the two. I wasn't worried about the size of the speaker, as it sounds like the records I'm trying to emulate, the original AC4 combo in this new line had an 8" speaker.
I'm told that each of them are great sounding. 8-)

Yes I have had a head and cabinet for a few years now. I have not used it for a while because I have been playing around with the ipad and some of the apps which is taking up more and more of my time.
The head and cabinet has a great sound. A real Vox sound, and you get it as soon as you turn on the amp. No messing around like the ipad. It is also quite loud if you need it. Unfortunately I have never tried a combo so I cannot tell you if there is much difference between the two. I imagine the bigger speaker in the cabinet must change the sound to some extent, but I think you will be happy with either. I cant get the same sound from the ipad yet, probably never will.

Cheers,

This one was with the magicstomp which was the latest & greatest at the time - Tried with the ESE as well at the time but the output just sent the EF86 into total overdrive

Dave, are you talking about the hardwired version or the normal £225 AC4?

I tried the hand-wired version of it side by side and hard no difference in tone, which is what I was looking for. Mine cost £155 used, it was the standard £250 jobbie.

The secondhand price of the TV seems to be dropping couple of good bargains on eBay at the moment. I just picked up the head and cabinet model for £90. I can now have stereo output into 10 watts and the two amps cost £200 . Well worth it

I picked up the TV ten inch speaker jobbie for £100 which was an absolute bargain as it was a minter, unused. It's all I'll ever need for home playing. :)
