Sue Ryder Charity Shop Guitars

Postby Ryan » 27 Aug 2014, 18:31

Hi All,
Does anyone remember the range of Guitars that were made by the Charity shop Sue Ryder, around about 2008/2009? They made a range of Stratocasters, Telecasters, and Les Paul copies in a variety of finishes. If i remember correctly, i heard that 1 of the bass players who played with the Shadows(Can't remember which 1), was involved in the production of them, did anyone else hear that?
I believe the strats were selling from about £150, tele's round about the same, Les Paul's round about £180, memory is a bit fuzzy so these are estimate prices but not far off.
I read, somewhere, that some of the smaller guitar shops, were complaining about the prices Sue Ryder shops were selling these for, as they couldn't compete. Then all of a sudden, after about a year or so of selling them, Sue Ryder shops began selling them off at ridiculous prices. At this point, i purchased 1 of the tele copies for about £69 and 1 of the LP goldtop copies for about £79, i just had to try them at these prices. I was pleasantly surprised with them, for the price i paid for them.
I sold them about 1 1/2yr to 2 yrs ago, purely down to lack of space, as i already had a few guitars in my collection. I do regret this now, as i wondered if they would be sought after because of the controversy surrounding them and they wasn't bad guitars.
At the time they were selling them in the shops, on Sue Ryder's website, there used to be a page with all of the different guitars they sold, including the 1's mentioned above. I believe there was also an SG style, Casino style, Gretsch style copies and a variety of other instruments, if my memory serves me correctly. It seems nowadays they only sell acoustics, Ukelele's and other smaller instruments. Does anyone know the truth about why they changed this, as my information came from different websites at the time. I can't seem to find any info on them any more, it's like they never existed :?
Cheers

Hi
The Precision Bass Copy Was designed with the help of Mark Griffiths
He can be seen playing it on The royal variety show 2008 (Though This Performance is mimed) as the show sound track was pre recorded
But The vocals are live

Yes, all the guitars were developed with the help of Mark Griffiths and were really very good. I still have the Sue Ryder Tele I bought for £56, just out of curiosity. The neck is excellent and I have it set up with a beautiful action. The original PUs were okay but I swapped them for a set of Fender Custom Shop Texas Specials and it sounds great. I also added a Bigsby. So, for a total outlay of around £250 I have a guitar that plays and sounds like Teles four times the price. All of my other guitars are high-end top makes like Gibson and Fender, but my modified Sue Ryder Tele fits in very nicely.

I bought an SR Tele after reading Noel's comments on his. Still play it a lot; the Strat isn't quite so impressive but still good. I bought a s/h bass from someone who had purchased one in every colour then realised that was a bit OTT. A good backup bass.

Hi,
Thanks to everyone who answered this thread, glad i wasn't the only 1 who thought they were of decent quality, wish i'd have kept mine now.
Does anybody know the real reason why they stopped selling them? as at the time they seemed to be selling well.
Cheers
