Howard Reed Jr? Apparently he was only with Gene and the Bluecaps touring for a couple of months in 1958....I'd not previously heard of him (or his black Strat!) until the earlier post and having just done some net searching...)

That's really super -anorak stuff!

Either way, I'll always think of the significant Bluecaps lead guitarists as Cliff Gallup (Duo Jet) and Johnny Meeks (Strat- whitish colour!)

Anyway, a guitar's colour hardly affects the sound or the player's skill and talent surely?

It's nothing to do with sound or talent, it was merely to show that the black Strat existed back then. 8-)

There are some really useful sites allowing you to design your own custom fender. I am currently torn between Sonic / Daphne and Blueburst for a Jazzmaster project with maple fretboard. Problem is I keep changing my mind or will have to get more bodies and have a range

Regarding the 'Mary Kaye' Strat, those interested might like to know that Squier Classic Vibe series actually do their version of it. It is indeed in a kinda translucent light Blonde with grain visible. It's a '50s model Strat with a Maple board & has the Gold coloured hardware. I bought one last year when they first came out, as I liked the look of it & I hadn't got a Squier CV '50s model. It's a great guitar, like the rest of that range, but at the time had a premium price of £380, compared to the rest of the range which was around £320. I believe it may be a little cheaper by now.

Tony.
