Thought I would announce the purchase of a new guitar...

Postby Strummer » 20 Mar 2014, 16:54

After months and months of agonising I finally bought myself a brand new Gretsch g5422TDCG (White with Gold fittings) It also has the new "Black Top" Filtertron-Tron* pickups. They are fantastic and give you that typical Gretsch sound. I find the guitar, light, beautiful to play (so easy and comfortable) and the body is 'full hollow' and therefore resonates a beautiful tonal quality that most other semi-accoustics do not attain. It also has a Bigsby tremolo attached which i have found to better than the one I had on the Vintage 'White Falcon' copy. I gave that guitar to my cousin who loves it.

The body on the Gretsch is easier to wrap myself around, not having 6ft arms and all that. However, although the body is smaller, it gives that 'BIG SOUND' and therefore i do not feel i am missing out.

I now have a real nice group of guitars and can pick 'n' choose as I wish.

If anybody was thinking of buying a semi I would wholeheartedly suggest testing the Gretsch, lovely guitar.

P.S. - Ghost Riders in the Sky sounds very good on it. Mind you i don't do too bad on my Fender Strats and Burns guitars.

Cheers for now

Is that from the Electromatic range? I've toyed with getting one but would have to give up an existing guitar from my modest collection and I just can't!

Hi Mike,

Yes, it is, but, it's "upper class" compared to the rest of that range. I can't state enough how lovely to hold and play it is. Really, really comfortable with a Bigsby that doesn't feel like a piece of elastic. It really is a nice guitar. The *Filter-tron* pickups are just great too. The whole guitar is light, yet has a wonderful BIG guitar resonance to it. The lows are booming, but mellow, yet the highs are really high and spot on. A well made piece of equipment indeed.

I did a clever bit of 'shopping around' and whilst other peeps were selling this model for between, £711 (The cheapest) up to £799 I got mine off the Internet from a shop in Scotland for £681 and NO delivery or postal charges! So £681 Lock, Stock and Barrels.

It IS a Gretsch and they have made sure that anything with their name on, even if its not a White Falcon etc, comes up to their standards. If you want a semi, then spend a little more and buy this one, you will not be disappointed I assure you.

I assure you, based on true facts my friend.

Go try one and make your own mind up, after all it costs nothing to "try one" does it?

Good luck, let me know if you do and how you find it please.

Are they Chinese made. I tried the 3 pick up G5622 and was disappointed that it did not sound very Gretchy but as I recall that had the new HiLotron pick ups. Perhaps try the 5422. I bought a 5570 and that was superb. I was going to change pick ups to TVJ as it sounds more like a Gibson than a Gretsch. Decided to keep the originals as did not want to spend another£230 on it

Hi , enjoy your new Gretsch,, ,,, I have the Duo Jet 6128t and love the tonal quality it produces , much more than the strats I have .

But that is a matter of preference to some people, I bought my 6128t new in 2003 , its still in mint condition as I don't play it now and lives in its case.

I saw David Gilmour playing one and thought , I want one ,,,, so I bought one ,,at a cool £1400.

Have fun with the new addition ,,

Regards

Hi Dave,

Just seen your March 29th post, sorry for the delay, but have been busy and "off-site".

So glad you are so happy with your Gretsch. But, sorry you don't play it now. Seems a shame when you spend out that much money and don't play it at all. I was playing my Strats over the weekend, but, did get BOTH my semi-accoustics out, the Tanglewood Memphis and the Gretsch. Really nice guitars. They give a different emphasis on certain tunes that my Strats and Burns do not. Likewise, the Strats and Burns do things that the Semi's cannot. I guess they all 'have their place?'

Anyway, get twanging again and start to enjoy some "me time".

Regards
