This is exactly what I meant when writing : "But the higher the speaker power rating, the less the speaker will be saturated."

That is why I wish to fit a bigger wattage speaker but am concerned about the bigger magnet affecting the output valves that are very close to it.

Hi Dave: I rather fancy the Ragin Cajun but am concerned as to the close proximity of the output valves to the very large magnet.

Hi Jim,

It's good to hear that you had the Weber in close proximity to the output valves for three years with no problems. That's what I wanted to hear. I have heard Ron's amplifier and it has a superb sound. The Weber is certainly in the frame 10F150 (60watt) (£118 inc VAT & £10 p&p), but so is the Eminence 'Ragin Cajun' (75watt) (£54.67 inc VAT & freepost) which is also about the same size and recommended.

Thanks Jim

Hi Roger

Even though you have changed some components in the amp, many of the remaining components are 20% tolerance.
It's a guitar amp not a hi-fi amp (try your guitar through a decent quality home hi-fi & see how different it sounds)
Fender as with all other guitar amps rely on the interaction between amp/cab/speaker with all the inherent colouration/distortion that results. Changing speakers will change the sound of course, but no two amps will sound exactly the same even when using the same speaker/output valves.

I really do think you are over analysing the situation..........................my advice would be to stick with the current speaker until your very sure about it's replacement.

The replacement speakers your thinking about are not better than the original.....they are different. You can't guarantee that the speaker you have heard in somebody else's PJ will sound exactly the same in your amp.

Decisions, decisions

Dick.

Hi Dick,

The components I changed was to cut down the background hum and hiss and I managed that quite successfully, It was not to adjust the tone. The reversion back to the 1994 circuit design was because I prefer the earlier tonal network to the later one which lets a little more of the low frequencies through. I agree that there are a lot more of the components that have quite wide tolerances but that doesn't matter to a certain extent as they do not affect the tone or the noise. I agree with you that no two amps will ever sound the same due to a number of factors, but they can be reasonably close depending on what we're looking for.

I probably am over analysing the situation but I know what I'm looking for and I know what I don't like. I'm not sure that the affect that I can hear will also be apparent in a replacement speaker, who knows. I might just take the gamble.

By the way, following your advice I checked the security of the stock speaker. All four screws were tightened down evenly. What I was surprised about was that it only needed firm pressure with a thumb and first finger on the screwdriver to undo the screws. The gasket on the front of the speaker was the hard flat type. When screwing the speaker back in, I tightened the screws down with slightly more tension. The speaker characteristics following the tightening exercise was exactly the same as before.

That's good Roger as it tells me that the speaker has not been removed/re tightened etc.. & I would expect Fender to get the speaker mounting right during assembly (hopefully ;) )

Will be very interested to hear what you do eventually decide upon speaker wise & I hope that it is what your looking for.

By the way it's very easy to fit a neg f/back switch to these, (it's the purple wire from pcb to speaker jack) makes it more "Vox" like perhaps ? I have done this on all the PJ's I have had & personally like the way it sounds. Worth a try ?.

Cheers

Dick.

Hi Dick,

Thanks. It's funny that you mention a negative feedback switch. I had been thinking about fitting one last time I'd had it apart but forgot. Maybe next time eh!.

I think it worthwhile to break the stock speaker in - lots of info on the web check Watford Valves - then see if you like it. It really makes a difference!

Hi David,

Yes, I agree. I've been playing with the amp a lot lately. I have also been to the Watford Valves website and been through their new speaker processes. But you know how it is when you've already made your mind up about something. It does take a lot to change it back again.
