I think those D'Addario sets are roundwound and are meant for 'modern' 6 string long scale basses which are tuned B-E-A-D-G-B(or C), whereas the normal tuning for a Fender Bass VI is EADGBE, and also it's also a short scale instrument.

I think Fender still make a suitable Bass VI flatwound set, although my mate who plays bass in my band tried a set of these on his 1964 Bass VI and the bottom E wouldn't tune right and sounded dead...

Anyway, best of luck!

Hello Kurt

The strings which Barry supplied me with were flat wound Rotosound. Out of interest I have compared three sets of recommended strings - the first two are those recommended by Barry Gibson and Trevor Midgley for the Burns Barracuda and the third are those used on the Fender V1

String Tuning Guage – Barry Gibson Guage – Trevor Midgley Guage- Fender V1
1st E 0.018 0.023 0.025
2nd B 0.030 0.034 0.035
3rd G 0.035 0.044 0.045
4th D 0.050 0.056 0.055
5th A 0.075 0.072 0.075
6th E 0.087 0.084 0.095

One member of the Shadows website (Chas De Lacey) who uses a Fender V1 on a regular (gigging) basis has informed me that he uses an even lower guage bottom E of 0.105. Chas has recorded a particularly good version of “Man from Nowhere” on his Fender V1 – copy on You Tube.

Best wishes

Tony

PS I have tried to edit the spacing on the data for the three sets of gauges - unfortunately not able to - thus they are all clustered together.

Hi Tony,
Many thanks for your information, very valuable. I will wait for the La Bella strings .25 - .95 which I have ordered last week from US and see how they fit the Squier. Do you have any price information for the Rotosound sets?

Best wishes

You're right, I wrongly thought they were flatwound.

There is a possibility that custom sets of flatwounds can be ordered (by a particular dealer) from Picato (General Music Strings, I think).

Custom orders are subject to a minimum quantity of twenty-four sets.

Anybody want to put their name on the list in order to make the order feasible?

I just got a set of La Bella flatwounds from ebay that someone had tried but didn't like. Although only "used once" they were a reasonable price at £39. I'll be fitting them today.

So, if we might be looking at a similar price Jim, add me to the list please.

I think we might be looking at less than that. I'll make more enquiries.
