Supposing... just supposing...

...that you had a unique opportunity to buy a 1960 Model 2 Meazzi Echomatic (the one with the original recording drum)...

...fully reconditioned and refurbished and in perfect working order (uniquely so, as far as is known)...

...the only known working example of the original echo unit used for Apache, Wonderful Land, Please Don't Tease, The Young Ones, Nine Times Out Of Ten, FBI, etc, etc...

...what would it be worth? What would you be prepared to pay?

How many of your guitars would you be prepared to sell to buy it?
Well, there's a factotum for sale at the moment... £1250 ono.
ESE units new around £1200.
TVS about £1000+

Rarity value of meazzi....probably around four to four and a half thousand..(wild guess ) if it existed.

Does it ?????????????

Well I know of one such example and await it's owner giving me a demo and a chance to try it out as promised, but I can't imagine how much it would be worth in the big scheme of things and at the end of the day, seriously doubt that it would be the 'magic bullet' to achieve 'that sound'.

I have heard as close as it gets from gear worth considerably less money than we are speculating here. Just listening to sound alone, the latest eTap2 is more than capable, the rest of it is in the tone and talent of the player 8-) :?

Its value will be to the collector, not the gigging musician or amateur guitarist looking for the magic bullet. Maybe $3000?

I forgot to mention that the model in question was only used on the very early hits before Wonderful Land, which was recorded with a later model with different head spacings - that is how I unserstand it though I stand corrected.

Its not only the initial cost of the unit, maintenance/spares would have to be factored in to keep it in fully working condition, didn't the magnetized coating on the wheel suffer from problems ?. Cost ? £4/5000 to someone who wants to try and emulate those early sounds.

Dave

Are you still enthusiastic about the Catlinbread echo - do you use it much?

I did hear he has been quoted in saying its worth £10,000 :o
If is the same echo we have all heard about then It was advertised in Guitarist magazine quite some years back as Colin from The Rapiers had phoned up for it & had missed it by 5-10 mins.I think it was advertised for £3,500 at the time not working!
He has been asked would he want it know it has been fully restored he said "no" as its not original anymore.

Yes I am, though I don't use anything at the moment, as I can't play due to my illness. :(

Hi Jim, An original echomatic2 with the same echo patterns that give Hanks early sound would easily fetch £10k. It may not be worth it but it would easily sell for that sort of money. regards Gary
