Think the Marketing Manager of GAK deserves his P45 for allowing a truly awful demo of this model to be posted
on You Tube and probably their own site.
Surely someone could have bothered themselves to research the history of the Bass V1, its main significant players
over the years, and yes it can actually be used to play something melodic and pleasing to the ear on the lower register!!
Not a clever start to encourage sales I.M.H.O. !!!!

If the Squier Bass V1 is half decent at that price [£273] then its incredible value for money. Look forward to seeing one in the Shops when they are issued.

An interesting price.

Using the historic inflation calculator at http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/bills/article-1633409/Historic-inflation-calculator-value-money-changed-1900.html,

...it is possible to back calculate the value of £273 (in 2013 prices) as the equivalent of £17/6s/1d (decimal: £17.30½p) in 1966.

At that time, a Watkins Rapier 33 cost 27 guineas (£28.35) and a Hofner Galaxie cost 55 guineas (£57.75).

£17 would have bought a Rosetti Lucky 7 (14 guineas), a spare set or two of Red Dragon strings and a plectrum.

and a gallon of petrol 4/6d (22.5p) as was a pack of 20 fags but that's getting off topic!

Glad to hear you're feeling better, by the way, Jim

Jim

Really appreciated your cost analysis on the new Squire V1. Cheaper than a Watkins Rapier - which was an awful guitar, anyway and far, far cheaper than a Hofner Galaxie.
I'm look forward to comparing the new SquierV1 against my Barracuda Special.

Best wishes

I had the pleasure of playing the new Squier Vintage Modified Bass V1 today at "Rattle and Drum Music" shop in Derby. I played it through a Mesa Boogie Lone Star on the tweed setting (Fender type tone) with the reverb turned up to 75%.
Andy (the shop manager) and I were very pleasantly surprised at the quality of sound on all guitar settings - especially considering the selling price of only £277-00
Went though "Besame Mucho", "Man with the Golden Arm" and "Man from Nowhere" on both the "'Squier" and my "Burns Barracuda". The "'Squier" is supplied with wire wound strings while I have restrung my Barracuda with flat wounds (from Barry Gibson) - essential for the "Jet Harris" sound, thus not really a direct comparison.
My own opinion is that the "'Squier" is worth a darn sight more than the £277-00 asking price and with flat wounds would probably give the "Jet Harris" sound that Jet used to get on his Fender Bass V1.

Further comment by Andy was that he has been very pleased with the recent Squier copies of fender guitars, from a pricing, quality of construction and sound point of view.

Best wishes

Tony

PS - Andy tell me that the stock of Squier Bass V1's for Fender UK have all been issued - he only managed to get hold of one!

The archetypal Thunderbirds tone is found by combining neck and bridge pickups... That's all folks!

A good way of amplifying a Bass VI is to plug it into a guitar amp with reverb, then use a line out from the guitar pre-amp (the head phone outlet would be best, as it will cut out the guitar amp speakers and protect against speaker damage from the low bass strings) which is plugged into a separate bass amp...this way you can get the tone and reverb sorted but get the full range of the bass notes.

I tried this with my bass player mate's 1964 Bass VI some years ago and it gives a good Jet sound- but you really also need flatwounds to get Jet's growl rather than Duane's twang!

I was most interested in your comments above - Barry Gibson sent me an email some time ago when I was in the midst of purchasing a Burns Barracuda from him and he mentioned the fact to quote "Jet used two amps live , a guitar and a bass amp to give it a big bottom end sound".
I'll try both alternatives i.e.
a. Guitar amp plus Bass amp and
b. Feed through guitar amp and play through Bass amp

and compare the resultant sounds.

Best wishes
