having built a 28.5" scale, Bass VI Strat-o-like with a couple of P90's rather than 3 single coils, tuned an octave down, the sonic difference is nowhere near as great as on a regular guitar.
Given that most of us have only heard a 60's recording of the real thing and at the time Twang was the Thang, probably by the time Lennon and Bruce had there hands on them the amp and recording tone controls had been set differently.
From my own point of view, in 62 on my amp it was treble full on bass full off, but a few years later that had changed to full bass and treble at around 7 - there was no mid on an Eagle 30 watt valve amp.
I reckon these'd do the job well enough and GAK are doing them at well under £300
