In recent years, I have come to marvel that Selmer amps didn't do better in the sixties, particularly the first half of the decade. OK, they looked a bit garish in "croc" guise, but they sound superb and (IMHO) were better than Vox...

I agree Jim, they were built like brick s***houses.
I think it was good luck that Vox got in first.

The bigger Selmer amps (Treble & Bass 50, Zodiac 100, etc) all used fixed bias, which worked the EL34 output valves harder and gave a more 'raunchy' sound (this followed the pattern set by Fender, who were using fixed bias with their 6L6's in the fifties). Marshall amps likewise used fixed bias.

Vox really were the 'odd ones out' in using cathode bias which can never give as much output as fixed bias. Even the AC100 with it's 4 x EL34 had cathode bias and was more truly a 70 watt amp. The sound with cathode bias is cleaner, though, especially at lower volume levels.

I try to ring the changes with the guitars I take to our club (West of Wales Shadows and Guitar Club). I always have a Strat with me but also take, and play, my Gibson Custom Shop ES355, My Peerless Tonmemaster jazz guitar, Burns Custom Elite Dream, James Tyler Variax (great range of sounds from this one), and various others including a PG380 synth guitar and my old '73 SG Special. It's always interesting playing the same tunes on different guitars. 36-24-36 sounds really punchy on the 355, for instance.

At the recent Swisshads meeting I attended, there was a raffle, and the first prize was a superb fiesta red Squier Strat '50s Classic Vibe, but I didn't win it...

As an alternative , non-Shads type guitar, I can thoroughly recommend the Gibson L5.
