Dummy AC30.......

Postby ecca » 28 Oct 2012, 17:01

Hi all, I might be joining a Shadows type band and one requirement is a Vox AC30.
There's no way I can pick one up these days so I've been thinking about making a speaker cab to look like one and using an offstage, more manageable amp.
Any ideas about how to build it ?
The woodworking is easy but any ideas where would the diamond speaker cloth come from etc ?
Cheers,
Ecca

There's a cab build documented here:

Grill cloth used to be advertised quite regularly on Ebay (I bought some) but I haven't seen it for a while though these look a possibility. You'll need corners, baffle piping, gold "string", handles and feet too!

How about something like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOX-AC30-Vintage-Extension-Speaker-2X12-Blue-Alnico-Speakers-60s-/221145357759?pt=UK_MusicalInstr_Amplifiers_RL&hash=item337d4a5dbf

The cabinets on their own are quite light.

Another way to do it is to get an AC30 combo and re-house the head in a separate (head-sized) cabinet. That way, both amp and speakers are quite easy to carry. It isn't just the weight of an AC30 (or Twin Reverb) that's the problem - it's the way the weight and the bulk are distributed.

Steve...... that would be perfect had it not finshed 21st October.
Thanks all, great stuff.
Jim, I saw that but it seems a lot of cash for the scruffiest Vox cab ever to be on ebay.
Keep em coming....
