That describes some men I know too, Derek. And I don't want to look in the mirror!

12-52 for me, as I'm trying to cut down the variables. The good thing is that there are few heavy bends in the early Shadows (pre-Burns) numbers.

I'm trying to capture Bob Bogle's (Ventures) early sound too. Reducing the variables there, I am using what he probably used in 1960 - a Jazzmaster with heavy flatwounds. I installed 12-52s - Thomastik-Infields, which are supposed to be low-tension. Now, Ventures pieces have a LOT of bending. Try "Bulldog," for instance. I don't know how they did it. Must be all the eggs and milk, as Hank said in the Final Tour interview.

Hi 10-46 for me on the Drifter with 5 springs on the Trem
10-52 on the Legend (this also fills the nut slots and stops the strings from moving side to side in the nut slots )

On most of my strats I use Daddario 11-52.
On my 58 I use 14-62 for the old shad tunes,bending a 32 G no sweat

I've always used D'Addario 10-46s but have recently fitted my 62 reissue Strat (which only gets used to play Shadows) with 12-52s.

This is with a plain 3rd, what difference would I notice with a wound 3rd?

Well where possible I buy British such as Rotosound, reliable as ever.
They seem to have launched a new range of custom 11-54 called
Mikey Demus SKINDRED !!!
I thought I had misread Skindead for ripped bleeding fingers on the
fingerboard but no.
As for Mikey Demus another rock god? better go and google him
right now!!

I use either 11s or 12s as I like the fuller sound

Stratocasters:
On three of them: 12-52 (various makes, all with the correct wound G string).
On one of them: 10-46 with a 20 thou wound G string.

Plain G strings are just wrong on Strats with correctly staggered pickups (cf: recent threads on pickup stagger).

Les Pauls:
On two of them: 11-49 or 11-50 (depending on brand) - with wound G string.
On another of them (the one with a trem fitted): 12-52, as for Strats.

Burns Marvin (1965):
13 - 56 (no compromises).

Yamaha SGV 33/800:
10-46 (for mechanical reasons; I wish I could use heavier strings on them).
