Damage on 34346?

A detail from a picture posted on Facebook and very obviously from a shot taken at the same session as the famous sweaters/Telecaster shot used for the front cover of the group's first LP in 1961.

Surprisingly, and even though I've seen other shots with minor chip damage to "that Strat", there appears to be a lot of damage to the front lower edge of the body. No wonder it was resprayed after Cliff got it back...

Resprayed is not good for the selling price - lowers the value by 20 % !

does a respray devalue? well yes if you or I do it, but if it's a guitar with a history and part of it's history are the refinishes, think of George Harrison's Fool guitar, and hasn't the guitar in question been resprayed more than once? wasn't it white at some point and then Bruce refinished it back to pink?

I wouldn't think all those resprays would have much effect on it's value.

George didn't have a Fool guitar, you must be thinking of Eric Claptout.

Indeed Eric did have the Fool but I think you'll find George gave it to him, but I'll not go to war over it!!

Err I wouldnt think Mr Welch is so hard up to worry about the 20% decrease in value - cant ever see him parting with it!

indeed it is, but I was talking refinishes in general, not just Hank Planks.

I would think any personalisation a "name" does to a guitar does not devalue it.

How about a bitsa known as Blackie.

Or an Eddie Van Halen cast off

Or John Lennon's stripped Epi's and Rick's

And around 10 or so years ago I saw a recreation of a famous Led Zep Les Paul, which from memory had been given to him and refinished, but was now too valuable to take on the road.

But I think that for probably what most of us lowly guitarists pay for our guitars, it would be cheaper to buy one the right colour than have one refinished, I know I looked at having an Eggle refinished a couple of years back and it would have cost more than what they generally fetch on Ebay,
