I've seen that Tahitian Coral colour before and it would be easy to mistake it for faded fiesta red. I suspect that the one in the picture is a refinished job, it is a common sight to see paint sticking to the butt of the neck on refinishes, but I never saw it on a Fender finish, though I'm not in a position to say it couldn't happen, I just think it unlikely as I have stripped down many Stats and they have always been clean at that joint - who can know for certain? Interesting though.

The Candy Apple Red is a metallic (with an analogue in Lake Placid Blue), Iain, and unlikely to be mistaken for "Shadows Red".

'Proof that this colour is factory original can be seen after unscrewing the neck. An area of paint from the body has stuck to the neck leaving a bare spot in the neck pocket that is an exact match to the glob stuck to the neck.' Mmmm. I do hope the person who wrote that doesn't work as a defending barrister.

Some light reading for those who haven't done so before:

Aside from the Fiesta/Flamingo Red (or pink) debate (Hank's original quote in 1961 from The Shadows By Themselves refers to the colour as "Flamingo red"), Hank also described the original Strat as having a maple neck with an EBONY fingerboard!

As a black hardwood, this certainly doesn't appear to be the specification for #34346 and, as far as I'm aware, Fender never used this particular wood for that feature of production models of the Strat.

When did he ever say that, it's a new one on me ? :?

Dave

Have a look at "The Shadows by themselves" page 107.

Mind you, he also talks about the 'tremulo' and Flamingo red plastic paint...

Yep, the exact source! Maybe, the beatnik poet, Royston Ellis, as the book's editor, has to take some responsibility for these "facts"! ;)

Well, like man, yeah, but it's cool and far-out... You dig what I'm, like, saying?

Seriously, I reckon it's a combination of the ghost-writer plus the fact that we didn't know that much about guitars in those days...

At the time that "The Shadows By Themselves" was written and published, Hank did have a guitar with an ebony fretboard...
