and talking of colour reproduction if you look at the CD cover of The Shadows in the 60's the Burns guitars look to be a pale blue, now who stocks them??..............

Beautiful HQ videoclip with early sixties Fiesta Red Fenders. First recording by The Strangers released in 1963, "Kolme Kitaraa" ("Three Guitars"), seen here in feature film "Lauantaileikit" ("Saturdayplays").

I couldn't care less what it's called.
I didn't see the right colour of PINK until I bought the Mex HBM model in 2000.
Not red.Not red.Not red.Not red.Not red.Not red.

Hi there, does anyone know why the strats imported into the uk were repainted? was it just simply that the red/pink ones were the most popular and if so why weren't they ordered in fiesta red direct from fender?

I have discussed this before, but for your benefit here it is again.
The story goes that there weren't many red Strats' available in the early sixties and the majority of the stock arriving on these shores from Fender were sunburst and white models, which were getting a paint job in red on behalf of the Selmer who were importing them. I believe that this is where the colour variation was spawned.

If you look in my gallery on this site, there is photograph of a 1959 original red Strat owned by the son of one of my band members. It is not too many digits away (about 170) from Hank's original Strat (34346) by it's serial number and is all original and I believe this to be the correct red, my thinking is that Fender can't have had too many reds at that time. It also happens to be the identical red of my Fender '62 USA re-issue which is photographed next to it in one of the shots. This also verifies that Fender haven't forgotten what colour their red was back then. :)

Different shades of fiesta red sampled from existing guitars :

Fender only used two reds at that time. Fiesta Red, which was a duco colour. and Dakota red, which surprisingly was an acrilic.
Variations in shade and the resulting arguments as to the correct colour were caused by money.
Fender were producing a cheap workhorse guitar for the masses. So they would make guitars in set colours, the most numerous was Tobacco or sunburst. But this also caused the most problems to produce. The result, a lot of dodgy paint jobs, so to use these up and save money, they sprayed over them without a base coat first. this caused the yellow to bleed through over time and turned the red a pink colour. Same thing happend to those imported to the UK and repainted. On blue guitars it turned them a greener colour and on the green a turquoise colour. Hence the different shades of Surf green.

And despite peoples recollections of seeing different colours or shades, 34346 was originally Fiesta red.

Hope this helps.

Ian.

Since the Shadows (1958-68) used mainly white guitars, I have never understood the fascination with fiesta red/pink/whatever.

However, if you want your guitar to look "right", how about mixing up your own paint until you get the colour you recognise as FR and then spray your guitar with it? :)

I fully agree that there can be variations in paint shade of the same colour, having worked in the industry back in the sixties, but are any of these samples from an original untouched 1959 model? If not, I respectfully suggest that it is futile to use these examples when we have the real thing to look at.
After all, it doesn't get any closer than the real thing . . . does it ? :)
