Info on Vox branded Guyatone

Hi All

Im after some info on this guitar which a friend of mine has recently acquired, its a vox branded guyatone/antoria. I know he is after a pick up selector switch and any info would me greatly appreciated.

Interesting - you can see the pickup and control routings through the scratchplate. Is there a picture of the headstock?

Hi Scott, I was curious about the headstock shape just to get an idea of the rough year. Hank had the earlier headstock shape which was kind of long and thin as opposed to the later slightly fatter shape, and though I'm not sure of exactly when the change occurred, it would probably put it as later 50's rather than early 60's?

As I understand it the first Vox guitars of the late 50's were the Stroller (which were copies of the Guyatone), available in 1 or 2 pickup versions. Apparently the 2 pickup model later became known as the 'Shadow' (to then be replaced later still by a Strat-like shaped Stroller as the Shads moved to Fenders) - Though the guitar in the photos is clearly a Guyatone (tailpiece, set-neck etc.) The early Stroller had a 3-a-side headstock, bolt-on neck, plywood body and basic bridge and tailpiece. I wonder if this guitar could possibly be some sort of prototype/excercise prior to making a cheaper version, or could it be someone's just modified a Guyatone?

A fascinating reminder of how it would have been like Christmas to own a guitar like that in 1962.......and how horrible those things were back then - when even stuff like this was all the average young player back then could persuade their parents to buy for them, or they had to save up and pay for it themselves!

If only Fender had made and sold Squier guitars 50 years ago!

Here's the range of Vox guitars, early sixties.
I had a 'Shadow', 16gns for Christmas 1962, it was all but unplayable, for my birthday in March , 3 months later, I had a Hofner Colorama, much better.

My mom knitted me a jumper during the short time that I had this Vox Shadow guitar. ( didn't everyone ?)
Here's the pattern she made to do this.
The strange thing is that my mom was no artist but the head is decidedly one sided and yet I can't find any pictures of a one sided Vox Shadow anywhere.

The guitar you have there is a Vox SB2 (Solid Body 2 pick up). It pre dates the Stroller and Shadow models by several months and would I'm sure, have a single sided headstock just like the Guyatone LG models. Pictures of that would be interesting. Thanks for posting. MK http://www.voxguitars.info
