Postby Geoff Alderton LH » 02 Sep 2011, 09:09

Hi all.
Interesting item here the USA feds raiding the Gibson factory and telling them if you want to use Madagascan timber, move to Madagascar.
And we think we have problems with the EU.

The American government needs a reality check.

These rules are nothing to do with "threatened species" and everything to do with certain countries wanting the skilled work involved in crafting finished goods from their tropical hardwoods.

The snag for them is that no-one wants - or is likely to be persuaded to want - a guitar with a fretboard made in Madagascar, India or anywhere similar. Making a world-beating guitar isn't like handling telephone calls.

If you follow this line of American thinking (i.e Obama thinking) my friends in the states are convinced he is trying to copy one T. Blair and kill manufacturing in the USA.
Other companies are being targeted over trivial items and the Americans have yet again displayed their paranoia over everything.
In reality Gibson are not going to manufacture anything in Madagascar or India or Timbucktoo if you listen to the interview with Glenn Beck. The more serious situation is that the American government is prepared to put over 1200 jobs at risk through this act of stupidity.
Long live Glenn Beck and The Tea Party, at least they make it interesting.

As an American I can promise you that Beck tells it like it is. If you're from Neptune. He may be right in this case but even a broken clock is accurate twice a day.

This has as much credibility as your Guitar album taking advantage of The Shadows name posts. In other words none whatsoever.

As to the other comments...

1. This has nothing to do with Obama. The Lacey Act has been around for 100 years.

2. If Gibson has been using illegally imported wood they deserve everything coming to them.

3. Glenn Beck is a race-baiting, xenophobic, narcissist who was even too nutty for Fox News - Which means very, very nutty.

Chris Martin, Chairman and CEO of the C.F. Martin Guitar Co. in Nazareth, Pa., says that when he first heard guitars built from Madagascar rosewood, he dreamed it might be the long-sought substitute for Brazilian rosewood, whose trade was banned in the 1990s due to over-harvest. Then the situation in Madagascar changed.... And while some say the Lacey Act is burdensome, Martin supports it: "I think it's a wonderful thing. I think illegal logging is appalling. It should stop. And if this is what it takes unfortunately to stop unscrupulous operators, I'm all for it."

Hi Andrew.
Are you saying that the CD I bought in HK is the Shadows? like it says on the tin. The only ref to the artist's are The Shadows. It's not the Shadows Andrew, believe me. Not one note is played by The Shadows. Is this not taking advantage of The Shadows name? to sell a product.

The Democrats rise up!! Just like our Labour party - all talk no walk.

As we say in very proper England, each to their own, which for you Yankees means that if I like Glenn Beck then I am entitled to like him. I do not have to agree with you rather I am allowed an opinion all to myself.
I believe it is called freedom of choice.
And I do not agree with the over the top gun totin' feds scaring the bejezzes out of anyone.

Lets face it whoever is in the White House is the major target regardless whose name is actually on the bill (Lacey for example). Just like our Prime Minister

Hi all.
Interesting programme on the Fox News Report this morning, Gibson CEO on tomorrows programe, It's common knowledge Gibson donate to the Republican party and are a none union company. Other big US guitar companies , who, by the way get their rosewood from the same source as Gibson, donate to the Democratic party and are union orientated, have not been raided by the Feds. The Feds deny their raid was politicaly motivated. Some large furniture factories in the US are also asking the question, will they be raided, as they get their rosewood from the same place as Gibson and most of the other US guitar makers.
Looking forward to tomorrows programme.
Regards Geoff.
