Slight directional veer...

Just finished watching my DVD of the semi-legendary 1960 ATV series "The Strange World Of Gurney Slade", with Anthony Newley (no, he wasn't here watching it with me...).

Familiar faces in supporting roles include Una Stubbs (cf), Edwin "Interpol Calling" Richfield, Bernie Winters (yes, that one), Graham Stark (see "Finders Keepers") and the above-mentioned Anneke Wills (later in "Some People" and even "Dr Who").

Apart from Una Stubbs, Anneke Wills and Graham Stark, there's one other Shadows connection in the form of the studio working title for what became Stars Fell On Stockton; that is: Gooney Slade, for what are obvious reasons.

Great post! I recall looking at the programme's TV Times billing for weeks on end and wondering what it was like, but, due to its late night scheduling, I was never allowed to stay up and watch it... in some ways, I can probably see why, now! Hugh Paddick, of course, went on to make his mark on radio's Round The Horne. Bowie supposedly became an admirer of Anthony Newley through the series.

Seeing the names, Sid Green and Dick Hills, makes me think of Morecambe & Wise, which in turn reminds me of Eddie Braben who died on Tuesday.

And all inspired by Cliff Richard and the Shadows, so they claim!

Gurney Slade was named after a village in the West Country, an area rich in crazy place names. We enjoy spotting them on sign posts and imagining what their namesakes might be like. My current favourite is Compton Pauncefoot. Fine old character actor!

My definite favourite is near the A36 north west of Warminster (and therefore on the well-travelled route from Kent to Bath University via Guildford, Farnham, Odiham, Stonehenge and Shrewton/Chitterne): Upton Scudamore.

As Terry Wogan would have added: "...the old Shakespearean actor-manager...".

If you turn the middle knob to the left Una you get Radio Luxembourg . It beats as it sweeps as it cleans
but doesnt look to be the latest Dyson design more Clive Sinclair. Probably Alan Sugar sold these off the back
of his old Minivan!!!!
