I think you'll find that a certain M Thatcher was responsible for that little trick, back in the early 80s - part of redefining the UK economy based on service industries, and particularly, banking (and didn't they do well!!!) - our manufacturing industry had receded to the far east and elsewhere long before T Blair was even thought about.

It sounds like Gibson made a gross error, and got caught as well. I'm a bass player and somebody told me the other day they make basses..........when did this happen

Don - remind me some time to dig out a Kalamazoo-made Gibson/Epiphone EB2/Rivoli to show you.

Yes please, Jim - I'd be very interested to see/play one!

Sorry, that's a bit of an in-joke in bad taste amongst bass players - comparatively few use Gibsons and they have produced some oddities over the years - however two of my favourite bass players used EB3s - funny thing is they sounded (back in 1970 ish) like the records even in a live setting (Andy Fraser - Free; and Jack Bruce - various bands - though I clearly remember seeing him with the short lived Lifetime with Tony Williams) - this was something many others using other makes failed to achieve (well to many a bassist's ears). You'd sit there feverishly trying to get the sound of, say Leo Lyons of Ten Years After and failing miserably -only to go and see them live and find he didn't sound like him either!!!! So kudos to Gibson for that. The bass sound is an important component of the band Free.

Don

I was a great Free fan too, saw them live when they toured here in Australia in about 1971- Andy Fraser was amazingly good and his bass sound was excellent on stage, (and Paul Kossof was incredible too...)

Yes I agree they were fabulous and Kossoff the most unbelievably soulful and bluesy guitarist - such a tragic loss. I saw them at least 3 times, each time supported by Mott the Hoople, and incredible to think they were only in existence between 1968 and 1973 - so I must have seen every tour after the Fire and Water album.

On the original subject of the thread, I was reading the other day that a British guy is ordering a Sadowsky bass (boutique hand built for those who don't know - largely very upmarket Fender clones) and spec ing it at the moment - he can't have brazilian rosewood for the fretboard......I think I read this correctly - because it can't be EXPORTED from the US!

Although I didn't start this thread, I added to it several times. This thread is political and it has nothing to do with the Shadows. I am at a loss to understand how this thread remains yet Justin's posting keeps getting removed.

Andrew,

Surely it's a question of category? This is The Lounge where "You can post anything in here". Justin put his 'Appeal' into General, where messages should have some relevence to The Shadows. I see that David has put in a link to Justin's blog here in The Lounge, which seems fair.

That phrase 'post anything' is an interesting one. Between 'Ban everything' and 'Allow everything' there is a sliding scale where 'post anything' can be nudged backwards and forwards by contributors and by the moderators.

Consider that trio of all-time favourites, sex, politics and religion. The Lounge seems to have a fairly relaxed policy on jokes about sex, but there are one or two contributors who are a bit sensitive about politics or religion. It would be interesting to probe such sensitivity, but the sensitivity also seems to apply to talking about such topics at all, thus nudging 'post anything' towards the 'ban everything' end of the scale.

This thread has stayed in place because it is about a guitar manufacturing company and the location of it's factory and this is a guitar based site, hardly rocket science is it ? ;)

I agree. I first posted on this subject on 26 August 2011 and my aim was to inform fellow guitar enthusiasts. I didn't intend it to be political.

This thread is in The Lounge where we can all indulge in wholesome decent bar chat!

Cheers - I
