Noel Ford... and Radio Fun...

Postby JimN » 10 Oct 2014, 02:29

Tonight I've been reviewing the BBC Radio 4 three-part series "Radio Fun" (I was a contributor) and found that the first "punter" mentioned was our own, our very own, Noel Ford...

Ha! Yes, Jim, I do remember doing the interview for that programme from the BBC's studio at the uni in Aberystwyth. Just to be clear, I'm not old enough to have been a contributor to the comic, it was more about childhood memories and how it probably influenced me in the choice of my present career. At least, I think that's what it was about... the old memory, you know?...

Yes, you're arty farty aren't you Noel ? I'd forgotten that, you did me a magnificent 'Burns Malcolm' transfer .

Now then, my Eccamatic nameplates are a bit utility looking they could do with some arty fartying..........

I did mine from the Radio Kent studios at Tunbridge Wells.

Another contributor and myself were contacted by the producer because she found a conversation on usenet where we had exchanged views on our recollection of Radio Fun in a guitar newsgroup (probably because of the late Stan Stennett). So there's something to be said for the Deja News archive after all.

PS: Did the producer (Angela Sherwin) send you a copy of the series on CD-R?

Yes, Jim, I have the CDs and your post prompted me to have a quick re-listen to both our bits. Bob Monkhouse's narration was added later, of course, but coincidentally we had worked together when he narrated a couple of my short stories for Radio 4's Morning Story programme (I was writing as well as cartooning at the time) so I was already aware of his personal interest in comics. Heres' a caricature Bob drew of me when we first met at Pebble Mill Studios.
