Lulo Reinhardt

Postby George Geddes » 03 Jun 2013, 17:12

Lulo and his band played at Oran Mor in Glasgow last night, as part of the annual West End Festival.

Local quartet Rose Room played a fine set of gypsy swing and jazz vocals in support, but Lulo and his band absolutely dominated the evening. Lulo (grand-nephew of you-know-who) plays gypsy jazz, but mixes it with Latin, Celtic and Moorish influences. He tears up and down the fretboard when required, but can also play a tender version of Django's Castle. It's not traditional gypsy jazz - the band has a drummer and keyboard player, for a start - but the level of playing from all five musicians was staggering. I went with a guitar-playing mate, and the pair of us left the gig virtually speechless, because we had run out of superlatives.

Coming only a few days after the experience that was Tubular Bells for Two, it'll be a while before I have a musical week like that...
