Jim

Really enjoyed that version of Scarlett O'Hara and the other guitar pieces played on the Lawrence Welk Show. To a certain extent it reminded me of the good old days when Bert Weedon used to play his display pieces on 5 O'Clock Club etc.

Best wishes

Neil Levang has got a lead attached, but are he and the whole band miming? For the San Antonio Rose clip neither Levang not Buddy Merrill seem to have leads plugged in so the miming is more obvious. For Scarlett, wouldn't you expect that clear snare sound to need a mic nearby? Or the little clarinet solo?

I've nothing against miming, it's a necessary part of television production (and Presidential Inauguration ceremonies). Just interested.

It does look and sound a little as though they were miming ...perhaps to promote the then latest LW LP!

Either way , they were a top orchestra there at that time, and Neil LeVang and Buddy Merrill could certainly play excellent guitar- and the boys obviously gave Fenders much valuable exposure back then- they probably got free ones and endorsed them I'd guess...(there had been artist endorsements over there for years (e.g. the Nick Lucas model Gibson in the 1920's..)

Hmm... you can get that sound with a modern Burns Marvin using the bridge/neck combo...

Have a listen...

. . . . . and, it has to be said, that as soon as miming is involved there is no guarantee that the guitar that you see is the guitar that was played on the recording . . . . . .

The Merrill/Levang clip is in colour. In the USA, colour television (and colour video recording) were becoming available in the late 1960s. By then it is fair to say that Fender were a pretty well-known brand!
