I own a HM Fender Signature guitar ( 1997 ). I noticed that the PU`s ( CS 54 ) are screwed out very far to the strings. Especially to the higher strings.
There are thick strings on it (12-52). The previous owner said that it must be so for Hank specs. The sound is amazing ( rich and full and twangy ) with
my AC 30 ST 1965 amp.

So I want to make any changes .

The distance of the PU`s to the strings on my Squier HM is different. The PU`s are not screwed out as far as on my Fender. String gauge is 10 - 46 !

The crucial distance(s) is/are that between the magnet polepieces and the strings.

If the polepieces stand proud of the former and the pickup cover, it will look as the pickup is set "low" for a given setting of the polepiece/string measurement. Pickups with flush polepieces look as though they are set higher out of the body for the same setting.

There isn't really a correct height, but depending on how far they are from the strings they will sound different.

Generally they are closer to the thinner strings because being thinner they don't create as much energy.

The correct height is where you think they sound best.

Having said that you will find what is known as a sweet spot with patience, where that is tends to vary one pickup to another.

But it's not rocket science or witchcraft try different positions you won't break anything.
