Fender 65R upgrade?

I purchased one of these second hand some time ago as I needed an amp for rhythm and also one that was light to transport around.
I tried it for a few Shads lead numbers but find it very top end even with full bass on and treble almost off. Can anyone advise if a change of speaker will get more bottom end? The current speaker is the standard issue.

Does that model amp have an open back or a sealed speaker enclosure?

That could make a difference. There's usually a more full sound from a closed box, whereas an open back gives more top end.

Replacing the speaker on a budget amp is the best way to upgrade it, but it's impossible to know the results without trying it !
The Eminence Red Fang might be a good choice if you can borrow one for tests.

You could try replacing the speaker with a heavy duty (bass) speaker.

I had to do this when the original speaker died in my old open back Peavey- the repair guy fitted a heavy duty job, but the tone , whilst it had more bottom, was never as good to my ears.

Might be better to trade it for something more suitable...

I might flog my Vox AC30CC1 instead - too heavy for me these days!
