An effects footpedal with separate 'effect only' output?

Postby RayL » 05 May 2012, 08:52

Calling all effects pedal enthusiasts - please can you help me to find a pedal that works like this:
effects pedal.bmp
(13.94 KiB) Downloaded 5538 times

Amongst its effects it needs to have both echo and reverb, with the different effects selectable using the Up and Down push-switches and the name (or number) of the effect shown on the display . There needs to be an On/Off switch (or a variable pedal) for the effect.

Most important are

1. That it is a foot-pedal unit (or at least a rack with a foot-controller which includes the above buttons and display))
2. That there is a separate output which carries ONLY the effect signal.

The Zoom G2 1U unit almost fits the bill (I've got one) but it doesn't have the separate effects output.

I've looked around shops and the internet but not found anything. Can anyone help?

Hi, Ray,

A Boss DDn (eg, the DD3) does what you require, but only with digital delay echo, not reverb. It can be adjusted so that only the dry signal is present in one output and only the effected signal (unmixed with the dry signal) is present in the other.

I'm sure there are foot- pedal reverb units around which provide analogous facilities. But I'm not at all sure that there are many, if any, foot pedal units that do both satisfactorily.

Hi Jim

Thanks for the suggestion. What it can't do, of course, is to select different effects without grovelling around at stage level. What i'm looking for has to have presets for reverb, slapback, multiecho, etc all selectable with a tap of the toe.

Ray I can't think of any self-contained pedals that would satisfy all of your requirements but you could do it with an Alesis Q2 or Q20.

You could arrange that the left (or right) output socket provided dry signal, while the other socket gave only the effected signal.

Programs could be stepped through with a footswitch (momentary type) via the advance socket and effects can be switched on and off via the bypass socket.

Ray,

I don't know why I didn't think of it immediately, but the Yamaha Magicstomp will do what you need - including superb reverbs , delays, tape-echo simulations, Meazzi-based milti-head echo and loads of other things (and that's straight out of the box - there's no particular need for programming with a proprietary patch).

The problem is finding one...

Still...

PS: I have two. I don't wish to dispose of either of them (I made that mistake once before and had to scrabble around for a "replacement spare") but I'll be be happy to lend you one so that you can evaluate the facilities. Just ask.

Roger,

Thanks for the suggestion - presumably the display is only on the rack units, which would involve turning round on stage between numbers, which is what I was trying to avoid.

Jim,
The spec for the Magicstomp says "OUTPUT L/MONO, R: Standard Monaural"
No mention of separate effects output.

Quad GT and Atlantis have this facility.

I don't know about that labelling. On mine (both of them), the outputs are marked "L (mono) / R". The word "Monaural" is not used at all, and certainly is not attributed to the R-side output.

Either output will be mono on its own (of course), but the recommendation for mono-use (as most guitarists would in fact use it with a standard guitar amp) is to use the left channel only. One would only use both channels when using the unit as a studio effect with a mixing board or into a stereo PA. Or perhaps into two guitar amps (and even I can't be bothered with that).

The two outputs are distinct and (can be) stereophonic where the effect is stereo (eg, reverbs, chorus, flangers, ping-pong delays). The precise routing of signal vis-a-vis the outputs is a function of the deputed control parameters (ie, the three rotary controls) and the on-PC pre-programming. It is possible to route the dry to one ou put and the delayed signal to the other.

Thank you Jim.

Now let me take the request a little further.

My G2 1U also lets me place the effects that I want 'next to each other' so that, say, reverb is one foot-tap from slapback and two taps from multiecho. Thus, changing between effects does not involve a large number of taps Does the Magicstomp offer this? I ask because I seem to remember you doing quite a bit of tapping when moving between effects on your Magistomp.

Dave,

Surely neither the Quad GT nor the Atlantis are footpedals?
