Vintage VSA850 WH

Postby Strummer » 21 Feb 2012, 17:15

Hi all,

I have just recieved my purchase of a a brand new Vintage VSA850 WH guitar. It is a good copy of a Gretsch White Falcon but at something like a fifth of the price. It was delivered to my office this afternoon so will go home and play it tonight. Brilliant White with pearloid binding and, 24 carat gold plated hardware.

Apparently, they have a darn good write up also. Another gem to my collection (the wife was a bit miffed, but she had admitted it is a lovely guitar and quite likes it, all that remains now is for me to play it.)
It is a beautiful looking guitar though, I have to admit!

Quixck update on the Vintage VSA850 WH - Plays "like a dream" and gives me sounds like none of the others I own do, so, a definite 'plus' for that! Lol!

Save up hard now, and then Part exchange this one, once I have the ££ for a Gretsch White falco! My 'ultimate aim!' Still, thats a long way off yet, until then? Keep strummin' Lol!

A quick Google finds them as cheap as £469 inc.VAT at Reidys. I've always liked the look of them and Chet's sound from his Gretsch in the early 1960s.

Roger, believe me they are well worth the money. A "BIG" guitar, in every way, size, sound and playability. The three way switching is very good also. The fret board is 'nice and big', so much so it is very easy to play. I have short-ish, but strong hands and it is very comfortable to play, just like my Burns Marvin - EASY is the word i am looking for. Well worth a punt IMVHO.

That is a good price, they are retailing at £799 new, and, they have an excellent write up. I took it to my 'tutor' we just jam together these days, and he loved it, when I left him he said, "I'm still livking my lips!" Mind you he is a Semi Accoustic nut!

I played ASpache on it the other day, plugged in to my VOX AC30 all valve with Alesis Quadraverb, just for fun, and, it came out very well indeed, which surprised me? Lol!

Just realised, the £469 model you are quoting is the model with the non Gold Plated (24 carat) hardware. The model I have, the "Full Monty" if you will, IS £799...you will NOT pick this model up, brand new, for the price you have quoted...there are TWO types! Don't get fooled. Take a look on Utube and listen to the guy and hear the guitar.

I have been very, very lucky in this purchase, but, if you are prepared to keep your patience I am sure you could find a bargain as I did. Having now been able to play it a bit, I can safely vouch for its ability and sound I even played Apache on it over the weekend, plugged in to my VOX AC30 CC2 "all-valve." Sounded great! Varied the playing with some Country and Western and again, it came out great.

A real decent guitar IMO.

I haven't had the chance to check that out. Is the gold one a different spec? If not, the gold hardware isn't worth the extra cost. Far eastern gold tend to be very, very thin and not durable. I'm not really looking for one anyway - yet! I have to find proper space for the 17+ guitars I already have, which are generally fairly inaccessible at the moment!

"DV 247" have them at £469 today, but I've heard that the price IS going up so get in quick with your order! This is for the White/gold and includes delivery to 'standard' UK locations. GAK sell the Gretsch Electromatic G5129 for £592 but it's only with chrome hardware - with a genuine Bigsby too! To me that sounds better value that a Vintage for £799, but what do I know? ;)

Call me an old fool, but having done a bit of Googling and, as much as I like the "bling" gold on a guitar, I think I would rather go for one with "Gretsch" and "Bigsby" on it in the £500 to £800 price range. I reckon that the Vintage (nice guitars - I've had one of their 12-string electros for a few years) is styled more on the Electromatic than the White Falcon - especially the headstock. Not the block markers, agreed, but given the choice between a genuine Gretsch and a Vintage for similar money - there's no contest even if they are made in the same country!
