Magicstomp Software/Drivers Windows 7 / Vista

Someone on Perth site asked for ideas for workarounds on getting the drivers and software to run on windows 7 and Vista. I have managed to get it working on 32 bit versions of these OS but not able to have a go at the 64 bit versions at present. I repeat the post I made on Perths site here.

Hope it helps as Yamaha no longer support software updates for the MS ...

Might have to consider a dual boot computer with Win 7 and Win XP as yamaha do not support the stomp now. Also in some versions of Win7 (professional and above) there is an option to run programs in XP mode if you right mouse click on a program and select properties and look under compatability mode that might work. Also there are 32 and 64 bit versions of win 7 and will probably require the 32 bit version to run the old drivers. I have not tried it in win 7 but got it working in a 32 bit version of Vista so should be possible.

Update

Have now tried it out on a computer with Win 7 and it works with 32 bit version.

1. install the MS software from CD and reboot
2. Switch on your MS and connect usb lead firstly
3. Right mouse click on shortcut to MS editor and select properties and then compatability tab and get it to run in XP compatability mode service pack 2.
4. Win detects but will probably fail to install driver from disc so try browsing to win2k folder and double click the UB99 inf file if it does not install properly go to 'Device Manager' from windows control panel and look for the Yamaha device in the list which will probably have an asterisk against it because not working correctly and look in the device properties for that and then use update driver and browse to your installation CD for the MS and install the UB99 driver from the Win2k folder and select install anyway and will probably reboot system after that.
5. You should see the MIDI Driver icon in the windows control panel. Please note if you start the editor without connecting and switching on the stomp the MIDI driver does not show up in the software.

Have tested using a bulk receive and it works fine.

Cannot say if will work on 64 bit Win 7 at present as not got it to try.

I have the software for my Magicstomps installed on a laptop PC running Windows XP. Irrespective of any future changes to my main desktop machine (currently running Vista), I think I'll be holding on to the laptop - secondhand computers are almost worthless and there is little point in even trying to sell them. Why not see what you can find on the s/h market? You could corner the market in updating the Yamaha units!

Hi all

I have a need to use my MagicStomp again and naively thought it would work straight away with Windows 7... and I've had no joy in getting the Sound Editor to "see" the MagicStomp. I've tried updating the driver, but Win 7 tells me the best one is already installed.

Anyone help?

There are only a couple of easy and cheap ways to do it, David.

You could bring it here and let me do it for you (free), or.....

If you're working with win 7, Microsoft do a free download, its a bit big so takes a while to arrive, which runs alongside 7 and allows your machine to run in virtual XP mode. There were limitations in original XP with regard to RAM size but Microsoft have included a fix for this in the WIN 7/XP mode. This means you don't need a dual boot machine as both sit quite happily together in the same portion of the hard disk... in fact you can copy and paste between XP and 7 as they are both running at the same time.
Hope this is some help.

Don't have the link at hand as I'm on my hols, but if you Google "win 7 virtual xp download" you'll get several links and some ffedback from users...but take the Microsoft link as its the obvious official one.
Best of luck, john m.
