Sorry I am hopeless with ohms etc. I have recently bought an AC4 head and cabinet . The cabinet is 16 ohm. I want to try the extension speaker facility on my Gretsch g5222 amp. It states on that into 4 ohms. Can I try this safely just to trial to see if I want to invest in 12" cabinet for the g5222. Why do the manufacturers seem to have different ideas on using different ohm outputs .

If all you want to do is try it, that should be no problem.
Letting the output of an amplifier "see" a higher impedance than it would ideally expect will simply reduce the power compared to what it would have been if the impedances were correctly matched.
Doing it the other way round (using a higher impedance amp output into a lower-impedance speaker) is theoretically more risky; it can cause damage to the amp's components.
But just trying the combination you mention should cause no problems at all, particularly with a 4 watt amp and a higher-rated speaker.
