Vox AC-4

I went down to Richtone Music in Sheffield on Friday to stock up on strings and walked straight into the gaze of a used Vox AC-4 in green with a price tag of £155 on it.
My curiosity got the better of me and I tried it out with a standard USA Strat, liked what I heard and bought it.
I have to say that with my Strat and the valve Eccamatic eTap2, it's the closest and fastest THAT SOUND that I have ever heard - totally effortless. I'm talking the 1960/61 recorded Hank sound here. Vox AC-4, highly recommended ! it's a keeper for practicing and home recording. The amp has a 10" speaker with GAIN, BASS, TREBLE & VOLUME controls. :)

Great piece of kit - I got Amanda to add an EF86 channel (although it doesn't need it ...) - He's Kon Tiki recorded a couple of years ago on my AC-4 TV Heritage.

No EQ and warning - this'll scare bats

Great sound Mark, I couldn't believe how easy it was to get it so close.

I'm only using Ernie Ball 10/46 on mine and the sound is nailed on. I'll try and record something if the fingers will work. 8-)

You jammy sod Robbo. Been looking at Thomans to price match Red Dog Music'

This colour's crap http://www.thomann.de/gb/vox_ac4_blue.htm Red Dog will price match Thomans but they haven't got the price difference yet. They price matched my EPI ES-339 with Germany.

This the one you got?

Certainly looks to be a good budget amp with a Celestion 10 inch speaker.
Noticed some guy demonstrating a Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar with a Vox Pathfinder Amp on You Tube.
He was getting some impressive vintage surf tones out of this little amp!!!
Again shows the Bank Manager might not send you a nasty overdraft letter when he sees and hears your
prudent budget purchase!!

I think that to have a Vox AC30 in the bedroom emulating the stage presence of the times when we couldn't afford one that all these years later is not necessary. You don't need an amp that big unless you gig.

Somehow, it sounds identical to my AC30 through the EF 86 when it's cranked up to theatre level, only at a sensible volume - love it . :)
