I just wondered how much clean headroom these amps have before the distortion kicks in. I used to have a Fender XD 15 watt but you could only crank the volume up to about 3 before the distortion came in.

Neil,
I've just acquired a 90's Pro Junior (the smaller version of the Blues Junior without reverb). It's currently got Groove Tubes in but I'm thinking of Changing them for Philips Jan 12AX7s and Harma Retro EL84s, which should be even mellower. As it is, it doesn't start to get dirty until past number six.
I hope that's some help to you.
Regards,
Len

Neil,
Just a little PS. I forgot to mention it's also got a Jensen Alnico speaker.

Hi Neil

If you want more "clean headroom" on the BJ you can change the first pre-amp valve (V1) to a lower gain variety such as 5751

Cheers

Thank guys - they seem to have more clean headroom than the Xds had!

Not got the amp yet - was just enquiring about clean headroom for Shads stuff in smaller venues!
Also hear the Laney VC15 is good but only has a 10" speaker!

Laney do some very good small valve amps. Try the VC30 & LC30 models. They have the 4 x EL84 power amp valves set-up, like a Vox AC30. They are quite loud amps, certainly enough for small/medium size gigs & have that Voxy sparkle, without paying silly money for one.

I have a Laney valve LC15 with the 10" speaker, it is also fitted with the Roger Allcock EF86 valve unit which gives a very good Shadows sound which I have used in small venues.

Best regards,
Baz.

I have looked at the Laney 30 watt but already have an AC30CC1 which is getting too heavy for continual lifting in and out of the car! I was after something lighter but having considered a Mustang II, I would rather go for a valve amp that is a bit lighter than the Vox
