Just to say I now own a Vox AC4 TV two tone limited edition just released on sale and Roger Busby from our club bought the AC4 BL (Blue one).

Mine looks fabulous and I am really pleased with it. Both amps were tested side by side on sound and they give exactly the same brilliant AC30 Top Boost tone and are electronically the same except for cabinet design. No real discernable sound difference between them.

As for the Shads sound it does it in spades and is great for home use. I could see it being used at the club next Tuesday with a mic through the PA as the output is not going to be quite enough for a gig type situation but if playing at low volumes you might get away with it in a smallish room.

We tried an extension cab fitted with a Vintage 30 speaker and there was a noticeable improvement in the sound output, but that said the inbuilt speaker does a good job. I think cabinet design probably is a factor as well as using a 12" speaker. (The CA4 is closed back design the ext speaker was open back)

Needless to say I am very happy with this amp and I like the overdrive facility (Master vol/gain) as if you turn the bass and treble to zero and put some extra gain in you get a pretty good Ac15 early sound.

I own a AC30 Heritage and I like the sounds the AC4 does and it is pretty close with an ext cab as I had experience using the AC30 and I heard That sound !

Anyway the Ac30 is a great amp but it is not really suitable for use in the home unless I get a power sink maybe but the little AC4 is light like a lunchbox and does it all.

Cannot recommend them enough ! :D

Careful Dave Roger may react to your statement re G&L

dave robinson wrote:Sorry Roger I have to laugh. So effectively G & L (Leo Fender & George) have copied Leo's original Strat design but had to change the shape of the headstock for patent reasons, as well as a few more things, then the Chinese have produced a copy of that and you bought it ? That said you like it so are now considering a USA made one ? why not just buy a real Fender Strat - it's what it was and is.

If the tone and volume controls don't suit you on a normally wired Strat, do what I did and spend no more than a few pence on fitting a treble bleed kit and wire in the bridge pickup to the tone control - it does the same thing as you're describing for pennies.

Is it 2 G&L you have now hee hee

What is puzzling me though is all through the discussions with Roberto back in the early 2000s', that sound was a bit elusive but now it's here in spades. For me I put it down to retracing my steps back to before I got involved here and ridding myself of all the obligatory Hank related stuff and using common sense. Back in 1961 it was a Strat (a new one at that) , Vox amplifier and an echo unit (in my case a Copicat) and all the bands I saw had the sound, even the ones who could only afford Burns Vibra Artistes or Sonics or Futuramas and Hofners etc etc. The common denominator is the Vox amp.
A lot of hype has made a lot of money for some people, at our expence and at the expence of the true sound. I'm glad it's over. Not mentioning any names, but some tried to tell me how to get the sound when it became blatantly obvious that they didn't know what it was. Anyway like I said, all I ever wanted to do was enjoy my guitars and my music. Amen to that. :)

Let us face it, it has been quite a journey over the years understanding how to get the sound and it was only a few years ago that soundfiles really started to get close in on the sound. Now with the right gear and the understanding a lot of us can get a great Shadows sound.

We have been through a lot to get back to the place we are now which is a bit like chasing your tail really !

Roger does your AC-4 have the "switched power control" ?.
