I had one very like that colour pass through my hands a few years ago. It had been made at the Fender Japan custom shop and belonged to Tony Chan. He asked me to sell it in the UK for him, which I found very easy to do. He also had another JCC Strat (more traditional FR) for which he wanted only half the price of the other one...

Here's a Japanese Strat factory finished in 'Salmon Pink' - I take it this is the same as the colour that the UK members refer to?

Re: Fiesta Red??? (NAMM Vox content)

Something I found interesting at NAMM yesterday...

The Korg stand had loads of Vox amps and those now Vox guitars, but also had a range of new guitars under the name "Apache". They were all based on the Phantom and the Phantom Mk VI (ie, the Teardrop). All had just one pickup and a load of knobs for effects and rhythm (this was a real chip off the old Jennings block).

There were two in red...

One was FR or very close, but the other was slightly different - the pink we used to see on some Fenders back in the sixties which was close to FR but could not be confused with it when seen side by side. I'll have my camera when I meet up with Abel Khineche at the event later today... I'll try to get a shot of the two guitars together.

Interesting.

Not the "red" referred to above, I'm fairly certain, but that much lighter, almost flesh-toned, pink has been seen before. A friend in the UKMG guitar newsgroup had one a few years ago..

In the meantime:

This was the fascination with the colourand all other reds were rejected until I saw the proper pink in 2000.

I'm assuming this was on the limited run MIM Hank Marvin Signature? I have one too and I think the colour (whatever it's called) is spot on.

Yes, the pink Strat that Bill shows is definitely the 'Shell Pink' colour that you could get in the first edition of the MIM Classic series Strats some years back. The UK '60s Pink Strats were definitely more of a bright 'Blackpool Rock' Pink, or maybe the colour of those 'Shocking Pink' socks you could buy in the late '50s/ early '60s.

Thanks to Abel for the NAMM 2012 pics of those Vox Apache guitars, clearly showing the two different shades of red used on them (the one without a speaker in the back was a medium-scale bass).

A few days later, I was back at History for Hire in Hollywood and took these two photos in fixed lighting conditions. They are untouched except for cropping and being pasted into the same shot for easy comparison. Only one of them is clearly Fiesta Red. The other is in Coral Pink (the "lipstick" shade in which many of Fender's offset guitars - Jaguar, Jazzmaster, Jazz Bass) were finished).

With all this discussion about the colour of 34346 at the time of its purchase, are there no high-quality colour photographs from that time (preferably with other objects in the picture to give a colour reference)?

Hank's own comment in the 1980s was that ". . . . when it arrived the body was coloured flamingo pink, not an unsubtle red"
