I can see where you're coming from with this purchase Ecca, but in my experience doing similar things (i.e. owning a great but expensive guitar, then buying a cheaper similar model) after the novelty has worn off I end up playing the expensive one 'cos it sounds better, though I guess this goes back to your youth and the old guitar in the photos which changes the scene somewhat. It looks great, I hope you enjoy it.
Ecca's L5-CES and the Loar 600 have ancestry in common, but evolution means that they're not the same sort of animal this far down the generations.
I played a 1929 L5 (fully acoustic and non-cutaway, naturally) in V&R in Bath yesterday afternoon. It' was much more like the Loar than a modern Gibson. I suspect that it might have had a new neck, though.
Yes, got the case and even that was a surprise, I thought it was just a padded bag at first but it's not is it ? It's erm, not just a padded case. Thanks Jim, for inflicting this guitar upon me. Now........ can I get a Stetsbar on it ? I can really heap the blame on you then. Cheers Ec
