The pick ups on the Marvin look unusual. Were different ones used for Baldwin ?

Hi Bill,

Thanks for this.
The Baldwin looks to me as if it was a 'using up the bits' model when the company ceased trading. The pickups, if I remember rightly come from Baby Bison or maybe one of the semis! The maple neck is also a little unusual too. I'm sure Paul will be able to clarify.

Regards

Ian

It states that fingerboard was replaced with one from John Birch. If it itas been resprayed and a new scratchplate it sounds as if it's not been treated particularly well. As a Baldwin it would be quite rare without those mods.

Some interesting new stuff including a Vibraslim bass and a Framus star bass. I'm going down there on 4th Dec. never been to a guitar auction before. A friend of mine is after the Rickenbacher bass

There's a lot of interesting stuff there, Bill. All too tempting for me though! Hadn't been into a guitar shop for ages until a couple of weeks ago when my son asked me to check out a Telecaster for him. Wall-to-wall eye candy (Music Warehouse in Colchester)! I could have bought several on sight alone..................hence why I tend not to go into guitar shops these days.
If you do go to the auction, please try and keep an eye out for what the 1994 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Stratocaster goes for, as I've got one. I'm not a bass player, but that Ricky 4003 does look good, as does the Jack Bruce era Gibson EBO................not to mention the PRS Santana Dragon.............ooh matron!
So many guitars, so little self-restraint and so aware of further matrimonial upset!
Stephen.

The final version of the Baldwin Marvin employed the large 'Bar Magnet' single-coils as standard, with the scratchplate being amended accordingly. Presumably this was due to depleted stocks of Rez-O-Matiks or maybe because Baldwin simply decided to rationalise the range still further! The appropriately modified Marvin consequently may not have looked as much like Hank's, but it actually still sounded pretty good, courtesy of those big and beefy pickups. The auction example has been subjected to a few subsequent changes, with the John Birch-fitted maple fingerboard being the most obvious, apart from the Burns-branded treble horn scratchplate section of course. A new nut and a white refin are additional alterations, while the upper strap button has been re-positioned a couple of times.

I think one of these pick ups is on eBay at the moment. Not sure what it might have been fitted to or what the other pick ups are

That's a real odd-job eBay auction, as the Burns 'Bar Magnet' pickup is keeping company with a bunch of cheap and nasty Jap tat salvaged from an equally low budget six-string.
