Hi Justin,
Two sets that may be of interest - D'Addario Pure Nickel 11-48 EPN115 and (I'm currently using) 10-45 EPN110, which I believe are round cored.
They're not expensive at £5.70 a set, I like their slightly warmer tones and they seem to keep their freshness almost as long as Elixirs - maybe the nickel is better at retaining its newness than steel - just a guess.
I just fitted a set of 10s to my new Burns and will have it with me on Sunday and Adrian's also using these on his strat if you want to see how they feel and play. I shall be fitting a set to my strat when its existing Elixirs need changing.

I've looked at the blurb promoting the strings, which doesn't mention them being round cored, but I'm fairly certain that's what my local supplier stated and is why I went for them in the first place.

Maybe worth a try? :)

Cheers,
Martyn

The Strings Direct website shows that the D'Addario EPN110 strings are wound on a hexagonal core as are the rest of that range.

Thanks for the info Roger.
Silly thing is there's no description of the core section on the packets themselves - wonder why matey in the shop was so convinced they were round cored? :?

They still feel and play nicely and keep their tone for a long time, but probably aren't what Justin's looking for.

Read on a Gibson forum, an answer from Gibson about the L-5 strings to be discontinued :

Thanks for writing! No, we’re not discontinuing our line of strings. Guitar Center will be able to order them if they are out of stock. Thank you for the inquiry, and sorry about the confusion.

Best regards,

So the story about these string being discontinued was probably invented by a seller who had other models to sell, and didn't want to bother ordering them...

It seems that Gibson L-5 strings have a hex core after all. :(
