Baking soda is pure Sodium Bicarbonate (aka Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate) whereas baking powder is baking soda plus an acid (usually Tartaric Acid) and a drying agent (usually cornstarch)

Thanks Dave... baking soda is the thing - I think!

Isn't there a photograph of Hank with a Strat that has a piece of paper under a string at the nut? I thought I saw it on this forum. I've used this quick fix in the past and it works quite well 'till a proper repair can be carried out. Years ago a guitar maker/repair man made me a nice bone nut for my Telecaster cut from a sterilised dog bone bought from a pet shop.

You'll have the RSPCA after you (but I bet it'll have been a beef bone).

Could have been a dog bone, I never thought to ask, (well you wouldn't would you?). I sold the Tele it was fitted to years ago so I feel reasonably safe from a revenge attack from my Collie.

I works ! a few month ago, a member of our French Shadows forum made himself a nut to replace a broken one on his Strat. He used a bone saved from a "Pot-au-feu" (beef stew) :

I've used small pieces of Rizla paper with super glue in the past, a temporary fix which on one guitar became permanent, easier to control than trying to mix powder with glue and not have it run all over the place.
