Ventures Guitars

RUSSET wrote:Hi Andy, Just looking at my 'Ventures' book, strictly speaking Anna needs a sunburst P. Bass with the gold anodised pickguard & a Maple board to be strictly early Ventures, but, that's not a complaint. Bravo to you for getting out there & playing some Ventures music. My band always starts our first set with 'Walk dont run' & 'Perfidia'. No Jazzmaster though. A Strat going through a Roland GR55 which gives all sorts of guitar & pickup simulations. I think we us a P90 pickup sim. for these tunes. Tony.

You're absolutely right, Tony. Here is the 2nd cover for the original WDR album (the first being the guys pretending to be the Ventures):

Would PBass the Shadows first used be like the Ventures' guitar? This was a sunburst too.

Anna got her PBass before we decided to do the Ventures. It has that volume knob button that switches it between PBass and Jazzbass tones, or so the manual says. I hope it will be all right.

It's great you play the Ventures as well. I read that in the UK their "Perfidia" placed higher on the charts than two pieces the Shadows released at the same time (Frightened City neing one, I think).

Hi Andy,
I guess Anna could replace her White pickguard with a Gold anodised one if she wanted to, there are lots of suppliers on Ebay/internet to check out. Jet Harris's first P.Bass was, indeed, a sunburst one, but had a Rosewood board & a tortoiseshell pickguard. I'm not sure about the statistics of who got to where in the record charts. I just remember, as a 14 year old just getting into pop music the great first appearances of the Shadows oon TV shows & hearing the Ventures records 'Walk don't Run', 'Perfidia' & 'Lullaby of the Leaves' being played on the Radio. We sort of regarded them as the American Shadows, as they had a similar line-up & played guitar instrumental music, which was very new to us here at the time. Prior to that, we just heard guys like Les Paul & Chet Atkins which seemed to fit in more with the previous generation's taste.

Best Regards, Tony.

Thanks, Tony. I'll tell Anna about the pickguards. She hasn't been on Shadowmusic much.

'Walk don't Run', 'Perfidia,' & 'Lullaby of the Leaves' are to me the Ventures, Tony. We're a U.S. town in many ways, so I heard those quite ahead of the Shadows. And you are very right about Les Paul & Chet Atkins in that they seemed to be the previous generation's. The Ventures and the Shadows pieces were the music I felt was our own. We must be the same age,

Best regards,

Andy

Hey all can anyone give me a rough idea on the waiting time between ordering from the custom shop and recievingthe guitar? Also does anyone out there own a Brian Johnson Strat? I can't decide which to go for and would like some feedback. I own several fenders (though no cs models obviously) so i know I'll get an excellent quality guitar if I order from Fender but wondered how the Johnson Strats measure up to the Fenders.
Any info would be great
thanks

Build time

Postby abstamaria » 08 Apr 2012, 23:51

Phil,

The usual build time is six months from the date of the order to delivery. This is for a "masterbuilt" guitar, where one person builds the guitar; the builder's name will appear below the customshop decal at the back of the headstock. If you want a specific builder, such as John Cruz who is I am told the best for relic finishes, and that builder is busy, you may have to wait longer. Or you could be lucky and order when the line is short and get your guitar in three months or so.

"Teambuilt" guitars take less time, but you will still be talking months.

If you don't have really special requirements, you could just check customshop dealers, who may have a master or team built guitar of your desired specification in their inventory. Music Gallery in Chicago is one such dealer; they have a website, on which I found a NOS John Cruz '59 Strat that almost matched the Cliff/Hank Strat, with a lovely AAA figured maple neck. But it was painted Inca Silver. It also has a fat neck that I wasn't sure of in the beginning, but now love. It is the best sounding of my guitars (I don't have many). And the gold hardware on silver looks really stunning to my eyes.

Hi,
I just thought I ought to say that I have NOS 56 Custom Shop Vintage Spec Gold Hardware AA Birdseye in Fiesta Red on regular order with Fender. I get about 4 to 6 a year depending on the Custom Shop. I sold one last Monday and by some miracle Fender delivered another a few days later. It is not on the website yet as I have two non UK enquiries already but if you are interested send me an email or give me a call at Oasis.
Shameless plug over.
