Salutary tale.....
I bought an SG Special that was advertised in the local paper.
Knocked him down to £350, thought I'd done well.
Got it home thought I'd just take a look round it.
No serial number matched up with Gibson, no US parts in the controls, no Gibson USA marks in the woodwork.
Took a pick-up off and it was an Epiphone.
It wasn't a Gibson at all but boy did it look the part.
I took it back and got my money back.
How shocked was the bloke at this ( not).

Some good advice from someone who did exactly that - check out the materials it's made from and play it ! I foolishly bought a Tokai Les Paul thinking along those lines and it sounded nothing like the real deal as it was made from different materials (no mahogany in sight) and apart from playing well was a big disappointment. I moved it on and bought the real thing - result. I believe that at the higher end of the price range they are similar to the Gibson, but they are almost the same price.At the end of the day you get what you pay for.

It's got to be a Gibson, the last SG Standard I bought in San Diego in 2008 had the loudest, dirtiest pick-ups of any Gibson I've ever had.
I bought another on ebay that appears to be the proper job.
Should arrive Tuesday, can't wait.

What a great sound from the 'new' SG Special from ebay.
I took this one to bits immediately to make sure it was a Gibson and of course it was.
Silver in colour ( yak !)
Golden in tone.
