Geoff, the instrumental version of the track was never released on any official CD.

Me being me, I downloaded the track and attempted to try and get as close as I could to the sound using the eTap2hw.
Thus far I can get 80% with the right echo and tone, but there is something in there that eTap hasn't got, which to my ears is the reverb between the echoes, you hear it at the end on the stop. I've copied the way it's played and it stands out like a sore thumb. Great fun doing it but so far without adding reverb from elsewhere it just ain't it. It's got that thing that Phil Kelly described how his wheel machine sounds. :)

Dave did you try adding a reverb pedal or plugin to the eTap2hw sound? As far as I know, Piet's design of the eTap2hw DSP was intended just to accurately emulate the echo machine (Meazzi or whatever) and he never attempted to get the recorded sound exactly, which I think most of the EFTP boxes and Charlie's new box do aim to do.

Phil.

Hi Phil, yes I have and it does the job and fills the gaps, nothing wrong with the eTap2 in that respect. The tone and taps are perfect.
What I'm hearing though with Charlie's machine is the feedback leaking from the first three heads which gives that reverb effect described by Phil Kelly on his wheel Meazzi. Adding a little reverb to the eTap2 gets it pretty close. I've also managed to get something similar, though not yet perfect on the Zoom G3X, though still working on it. The important thing is that I'm having fun and 99% of an audience wouldn't hear it. I would add that I believe the key to be in the tone of the halo.
In my opinion though, Charlie has nailed it. :)

It's alwas been like that on this album. I have the original vinyl stereo version. This is why the full instrumental version on Youtube is much more interesting.

All original or reissue copies of 21 Today on official EMI vinyl/ cd pressings, have had the dreadful talking
vocal on Happy Birthday.
I would assume that any issue that has the instrumental version substituted or added as a bonus track is
probably an unofficial bootleg, as such.
Free brown paper bag under the counter guv!!!
