ESE echomatic 1V help needed

Postby Egelund » 09 May 2016, 16:22

Hi all

I have a ESE echomatic 1V , not mine (yet)
The manual, if you could call it a manual, is only at phocopy with no real informations.
Can anyone give me some usefull settings for shadows music, as the present owner never really has used it, and therefore have no help to offer.

Thanks
Niels

The best machine I have used by far !

They all work slightly differently to each other but I can offer guidelines.

For APACHE heads 1 - 3 -4 FX -123 full on NO regen. Speed at 11-O-clock. First two controls around 2-O clock but may depend on how sensitive they are and should be adjusted accordingly.

The same head setting applies for FRIGHTENED CITY , MAN OF MYSTERY, THE STRANGER, FBI but with the speed faster around 1-O clock, maybe 2-O clock. Also you need to apply some regen here.

Wonderful Land and most others heads 1,2,3,4 on. Regen at 3-O clock (adjust either way if not quite right)
FX 123 set at 3-O clock. Speed at 4-O clock but may need adjustment - this is how it is on mine, but they vary.

You just need less echo volume for SHADOOGIE, SHINDIG, DANCE ON etc but Theme For Young Lovers is in between those and Wonderful Land in echo intensity.

Please understand that these are the settings that work on my ESE 1V, yours may vary so you need to use your ears and tweak the speed, regen and intensity either way.

I hope this guide helps :)

Hi Dave

Thank you for your advice.
Everything Works fine, all though the REGEN has to be a bit lower, to avoid feedback.
Like many others, I have had most of all the Echo units on the market.
This here sound a bit different, but then Again, you don.t have any reverb added.

I will tweak and test it for a while, before I decide what to do.
Hopefully I will get blown away.

I am not sure I would use it for live Work, but you newer know.
But like you have written somewhere, who can tell the difference.

Now, back to the ESE, JMI15 and a fender strat.

Thanks Again
Niels

Yes I understand what you are saying about the regen, mine goes around a long way before feedback, that' what I mean when I say that they all work in a slightly different way. As long as you understand that you will figure it out.
I hope you get the same enjoyment from the ESE as I do. :)

Hi Dave

I actually got on the way with your advice.
Normally there is a straight foreward response on most units.

But here you get a huge change in the pattern and sound, if you for example turn the speed Down or change the FX123.
Turning Down the speed seemed to make the sound bigger, and so on.
Very interesting indeed.

Been with the band tonight, but used my board with G3 with HAlls Echo, and a few other pedals.

I will let you know, how I am getting on with the echomatic.

Thank you for you reply.

best regards
Niels

Hi Dave, you are so right - one of the best machines. I`m now at a point were I have all the wellknown echounits ( except the Australian TVS ) for Shadows stuff in my home.
The last deal was a modified LONG TOM in perfect condition and working order. Very good sound, warm full and rich from the ESE & the Long Tom. The ESE sounds brighter
and comes closer to the old MEAZZI ( my opinion ) ! With my vintage 1962 AC 30 it nails the old Shadows tone! I love it.

Regards
Hans
