VOX AC30 Marshall Era

Postby JOHNNERS » 12 Apr 2016, 14:21

Hello All
I have recently purchased a rather unusual Vox AC30 from the Marshall/Rose Morris era (early nineties.)
Unusual because the cabinet is made entirely of solid ash or maple (I'm not sure which)
It's all valve with Blue Alnico's with black Vox logo and black steel vents and leather handles.
It looks stunning but I have never seen one like it before.
Does anyone know of a limited edition version (apart from the Mahogany) or have I stumbled across a
made to order model?
Regards

The Marshall built Vox AC-30 TBX is a great amp, sound wise and reliabillity wise. These usually have a red and an amber light next to the On/Off and Standby switches at the end of the panel. Also on the black information plate on the back, there's a letter 'M' in the serial number somewhere. If it's one of these it's a great amp.

However - there were some built by someone else under the Rose Morris banner, these were allegedly 'Anniversary' models featuring impressive leather handles and a brass info plate on the back, but the design of the amp chassis was problematic. I had one and I suffered the endless repairs and quickly got rid. The design caused overheating and warping of the chassis which led to all sorts of trouble for me.

The Marshall built one has no such problems, I still use one and it's as good as anything I ever heard, especially with Roger Alcock's Vintage Unit in place. :)

Hello Dave
Thanks for your input this one has no anniversary plate on the back.
It also has no "standard" centrally mounted Vox I.D. plate but the model No etc is built into
the rectangular mains and footswitch recess on the R.H.S of the back panel.
I have found pictures on North Coast Musics website but only of a standard model
and not one in solid wood.
Still a bit of a mystery I shall probably hang on to it because of it's quirkiness but I shall
need to sell at least one of my AC30's for the "ROOM" factor, I'm running out of space.
