Early String Corrosion

Postby anniv 63 » 14 Feb 2016, 18:09

Is anyone else finding this a problem, especially if they maybe not a top seller, come in unsealed individual
paper packets, and possibly been sitting too long on a suppliers shelf?
Good as they are, I have had early corrosion/ pitting particularly on Newtone wound strings, resulting in a
dulling tone after say just a week on maybe just one string in particular.
Certainly Vacuum packed sealed plastic wrappers i.e. Ernie Ball , D'darrio are always fine and fresh when
extracted from the packets.

Interesting question.
I use Elixir nanoweb so dont have a corrosion issue, but the strings on my Christmas "pressie" a Harley Benton ST-62 Strat copy were a different story. According to the paperwork it was built October 2015 and fitted with D'Addario strings at the factory in Korea. On receipt here the top 3 were showing rust so i changed them out.

When I used to use Fender Bullets an occasional pack would have strings covered in black spots and were returned - D'addario's have been fine.

Black Diamonds used to be rusty and/or knackered before you even put 'em on...NOS from the '50's!

Not a problem where they mostly have those vacuum sealed plastic bags these days..

I have believed for a long time that it's better to get used to using gear (including strings etc) that is commonly available anywhere...

Nothing worse than to be totally reliant on one specific brand or model of gear which may be hard to get...you can usually get , say, D'Addarios, or Fender etc anywhere on the earth..

No good being in the middle of the gig with a broken string and not being able or confident or comfortable without having your custom made hand wound strings in that funny gauge set that is the only one you can create your art with...
