Thanks everyone for your replies. I have changed the wiring so the neck and middle share a tone control and the bridge the other control, changed the strings and it is all sounding great.

It was good to read Dave's comments on his experience with pickups and about the G&L S500. I think this is a hidden gem. It sure gets some great reviews and is well priced. It reminds me of the Godin Session which is more expensive and which the local shop was recommending to me as they do not stock the G&L's. I will look into both of them further. Thanks for your help Dave.

I have the G&L S500 and it does cover a lot of sound bases and it is a favourite of mine. I got a special edition ash bodied Tribute Series natural finish with maple neck. I am tempted to try a Legacy / Legacy HB. The tone controls on the S500 are the best I have used (PTB Circuit).

It's a great guitar and matches my expensive Fenders' all the way, bear in mind that mine is the inexpensive 'Tribute' model and not the USA assembled one. I think mine too is an ash body similar to Roger's, it's finished in translucent blue/blackburst and has lovely grain showing through.
The G&L Legacy is also great value, especially from Thomann, check them out. :)
